[SOLVED]boot into installer fails (repeatedly)

Postby cuervo » Mar 11th, '15, 08:09

OK, downloaded 4.1 for x86_64 and burned the DVD..
booted the DVD and it starts booting from DVD
puts a GUI screen up showing 5 choices: I chose 2nd item: install Mageia
puts up some text-mode screens loading kernel.. reaches 100% and pauses
now, it again is in GUI mode showing some installer screen with two main sections:
Installation with several choices/stages beneath
Configuration with more choices/stages beneath.
soon thereafter, the machine spontaneously reboots with no input from me.
reason I say choices/stages is because this screen only persists for 4-5 secs before rebooting.
I cannot tell what is the desired action here because it fails so quickly. The mouse cursor is
present but that mouse cursor doesn't move nor respond when I move the mouse.
I have tried to stop the booting process several times along the fatal path by
hitting ESC, F2, TAB, and other keys.. none of which appear to deter the OS from its
destination of ultimately crashing.
I tried selection "safe mode" at one of the early boot screens. I also tried turning off ACPI.

This system is not new but has legacy components. My system components:

CPU is AMD64 Athlon X2 5600+ @ 2.8 GHz
mainboard is a DFI model NF-Ultra II - M2
memory is 2X2MB of PNY MD2048SD2
Video is a Gigabyte GS7300
HDD is an WDC WD5000AAKS-00D2B0 ATA/UDMA/133 500GB drive
DVDRW is an HP840D ATAPI drive
CDROM is a Liteon LTN-525 ATAPI drive
onboard NIC is an nForce forcedeth
PCI NIC is an SMC combo with a DEC 21040 tulip chip

I have previously run a live version of Mageia 3 and like it alot
but it has since become legacy/unsupported so I chose to get the latest
and install that to the disk.

The hard disk already has other OSes installed. I was wanting to install Mageia
alongside of these and simply add stanzas to te grub bootscreens. Here is what
is already installed:

Linux Mint
Insta snorby
smoothsec

what is the issue here? why doesn't this release of 4.1 install smoothly without a sudden reboot?

Hello,

given the response, there is obviously some vital information missing.
at the 1st screen where you choose to install the system, are buttons f1-f6 operationable?

after choosing to install the system and after the text mode section, are you presented with a language selection screen?
if so, are you then presented with with the license accept / decline screen?

well ben, if you have tried this yourself using an AMD64 system, you would readily see those results as I described them.
perhaps you would like the challenge of solving some of the dilemmas which Mageia is currently experiencing? Help yourself.
Personally, I am far too busy to waste my valuable time doing Mageia's debugging.

Since I have been installing, using Linux OSes since 1996 when I first installed RedHat 3.0.3, followed by countless
other distros, and have been down similiar roads too many times. Thus :D , I am not going to waste any more of my
valuable time trying to install an offering which has not received a reasonable amount of QA from the devs/testers at Mageia.
Until they invest the required time and effort doing diligence, then I will not be waiting around. There are so many other
Linux distros out there which just work right out of the proverbial box. I shall be using another of those.

There are lots of people using AMD64 systems here, and they did obviously not experience the same thing.

For the rest, that does not even warrant a response.

As one of the QA testers who actually uses AMD64 to test on without any issues, I'd suggest it's probably overheating and you need to clean it.

SOLVED.

I changed one piece of hardware in the configuration of this box: the video card.

The original video card was a Gigabyte GS7300 which has a legacy nVidia chipset.
The replacement video card is an MSI HD6450 Radeon PCIe card. After that single
change, he install went perfectly thereafter.

So, it seems that the system build installed ONLY the latest nVidia graphics drivers
and thus left legacy nVidia cards forsaken. Furthermore, there was no way for the
installer to recieve any notification of the graphics driver problem, with a dead display
driver. No way to go find a logfile with the telltale error logged.
Not even any attempt at a fallback to a rudimentary framebuffer driver.

Shame on the Mageia system architects for version 4 builds and inadequate QA.

BTW, the system is very nice, once installed. Thanks for that part of your efforts.
