How to install Brother scanner DS-620

Postby GaryVass » Feb 12th, '15, 19:28

Hello,

Hopefully someone can help here.... I purchased the DS Mobile 620 Brother USB scanner and am unable to get it to work on Mageia 4 64....

Brother makes linux drivers, and I have downloaded and installed... lspci does NOT see the scanner (although, at one point it thought it was a usb drive??)...

Brother Support has installed Mageia, installed their drivers and said that it seems to have installed properly, but they also can not see the scanner or get it to work. They have escalated it up the support ladder but did not have any idea when it will be looked at or fixed...

I use my system for tax and investment work and could really use this scanner! Any one have one that was able to get it to work? Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Help! Install Brother scanner - ds-620

Postby doktor5000 » Feb 12th, '15, 22:47

Please do the following after unplugging your scanner - Open a terminal, and as root run:
Code: Select all
journalctl -af

then wait a few seconds, and plugin the scanner, and wait again fifteen seconds or so, until no new output appears.

Afterwards please run following command as root
Code: Select all
lspcidrake -v
scanimage -L
sane-find-scanner

Then post everything here.

Also, which drivers did you install exactly (filenames)? Did you get them from http://support.brother.com/g/b/download ... =ds620_all ?

The instructions should be those:
http://support.brother.com/g/s/id/linux ... edirect=on

quick update...

I ran the lspcidrake -v command again, and it show (one line) that the DS-620 as usb_storage : Brother|DS-620 [Mass Storage|SCSI|Bulk-Only] (vendor:04f9 device:60e0)

Is there a way to tell the system it is a scanne and not a flash drive?

Also, can you please show the output as root of

I copied the missing files from the rpm driver (unarched it using Ark), and these are the updated readouts. There was no dll.conf file in the driver rpm from Brother:

Code: Select all

/etc/sane.d/dll.conf:dsseries

In reply to a previous question: No, there is no memory card slot, disk drive, or any memory in the DS-620 scanner

Ok, so it only seems to be a problem with either the udev rules supplied by Mageia or the udev rules supplied by Brother.
Can you please run the following command as normal user after unplugging the scanner:

Code: Select all
udevadm monitor

Then plugin the scanner, wait ten seconds or so, and press Ctrl+C. Then unplug the scanner.

Repeat the same procedure with

Code: Select all
udevadm monitor -pku

At any time the scanner is plugged, please also run
Code: Select all
ls -l /dev/usb/

Then post everything here.

----

Apart from that, what you could already try: Plugin the scanner, and as root unload the modules for usb_storage and usblp
Code: Select all
modprobe -r usblp; modprobe -r usb_storage

Then search for the scanner again as root via
Code: Select all
scanimage -L
sane-fine-scanner
Cauldron is not for the faint of heart!
Caution: Hot, bubbling magic inside. May explode or cook your kittens!

Re: How to install Brother scanner DS-620

I also tried the suggestions to unload the usb storage, after running the sane-find-scanner it reports that it can not find a scanner.... the scanimage -L just reports the integrated camera.

You mentioned you opened a support case with Brother - best send them this output and ask them for a customized udev rule ...

monitor will print the received events for:
UDEV - the event which udev sends out after rule processing
KERNEL - the kernel uevent

Well, I heard back from Brother, their reply was:

Dear Gary,
I spoke with the product support team. I was informed that the brother sane driver works. Unfortunately due to the diversity of Linux we can’t provide support for individual flavors of Linux

SO I guess I am on my own here...

I do need this scanner to work, and dont really want to change distros, I like Mageia.... anyone have any further suggestions on how I can get this scanner to operate?

Thanks in advance...
