did you download the dual arch dvd .iso, which will only give you Xfce, make into bootable media and install the Mageia Linux system?
how did you " download " KDE?
did you install via Mageia Control Center, or download a Mageia KDE live cd or dvd .iso or a Mageia classic install .iso and make a bootable media- cd / dvd / usb?
also, is your mobo 32 or 64 bit?

Thanks for your reply. Yes I think I downloaded the dual arch iso - burnt it to DVD. KDE came from MCC. 64bit.
Sounds like mageia KDE live cd/dvd - from TradeMe might be the answer. I'm an 80 year old long term newby/forum botherer from The Thames,NZ......................sarum

So you want to know how to login to KDE? Your initial post is a bit unclear about what exactly the problem is.

Hello Sarum

Not toooooo far from me then - welcome to Mageia.
If you installed task-kde4-minimal you should have everything you need for kde desktop.
go back to MCC, go to the bottom tab ,should be boot,
change the display manager to KDM [ KDE Display Manager ]
log out, not reboot.
logout is from the menu, under applications
at the login screen, there will be an icon to choose a different desktop.

not a Xfce user myself, so I am working from memory here.
depending on your available bandwidth, you could also just download the kde-live dvd.iso and burn it to disk and reinstall.

if you send me an email- under my name to the right of this post, I can send you a disk if you wish.

There's no need to change the display manager to be able to login to KDE. The latter three lines are sufficient.
