SOLVED: new FF update: can't see what I type in address bar

Postby leon244 » Oct 26th, '14, 15:46

Just upgraded to ff 31.2.0 and now I can no longer see what I type in the address bar. Otherwise it appears to be working correctly. I tried ff in the safemode and that did not help, so it does not appear to be an extension that is causing the problem. Any ideas would be helpful. I went to mozilla help site and did not find an answer there. Thanks

Is this the same problem as reported via the mageia-discuss mailing list https://ml.mageia.org/wwsympa-wrapper.f ... 00038.html
Then please follow the suggestions there, and provide the details asked there.

Apart from the firefox version your report basically misses important details.

Thank you. I went to the mailing list (https://ml.mageia.org/wwsympa-wrapper.fcgi/arc/discuss/2014-10/msg00042.html) and followed the suggestion to change gfx.xrender.enabled to FALSE and that fixed the problem.
Thanks for directing me there.

For what it's worth, as you're one of the few affected, would be you please provide some more information on your configuration?
If you don't know, the commands to query that are shown below the item - the commands should be run as normal user.

- desktop environment
Code: Select all
cat ~/.desktop

- processor
Code: Select all
cat /proc/cpuinfo

- graphics card and used driver
Code: Select all
grep -i driver /var/log/Xorg.0.log
lspcidrake -v | grep VGA

We'd need that information to determine how to fix this issue for other users in subsequent updates.

Hmmm, that didn't work out. What desktop environment do you use? KDE, GNOME, ... ?

Does the issue reoccur if you create a new user account (or rename/move away your firefox profile ~/.mozilla ? )

I had not done this. After I solved the issue I did not do anything further. I can do this if it will help, but I won't be able to this for a while because of the demands of work and other pressures. Let me know if you want me to revert gfx.xrender.enabled back to True and try with renaming my firefox profile.

If you rename the firefox profile folder (when firefox is not running) you don't need to revert the setting. But yes, this would also be interesting to hear your results from that.

So I renamed ~/.mozilla and the next time I ran firefox the problem recurred; I could no longer see the address typed into the address bar beyond the first 3 characters. I then reinstated my original ~/.mozilla and the issue went away.

Hope that helps. Let me know if I can do anything else.

Well, I've yet to reproduce it or find what triggers it. Can you please show me what settings you have in KDE systemsettings -> workspace effects -> advanced?

Hi, All

This solution worked for me as well and I thought I would add my data to the thread. Hope it helps.

If I rename my ~/.mozilla directory and allow Firefox to recreate a new one, the problem reoccurs. Reinstating my normal ~/.mozilla data again fixes the issue.

My information for System Settings>Desktop Effects>Advanced are:
Code: Select all
Compositing Type:  OpenGL
Qt graphics system:  Raster
Keep windows thumbnail:  Only for shown windows
Scale method:  Accurate
Suspend desktop effects for fullscreen windows is checked.
Use OpenGL 2 Shaders is checked.
Use VSync is checked.
Enable color correction (experimental) in not checked.

Re: SOLVED: new FF update: can't see what I type in address

Hmmm, so this is interesting. Another KDE user, with a completely different graphics card.
Sadly I cannot reproduce it here, with nvidia driver and also KDE. Will have to look further.

Also disabling xrender has some sideeffects, see the notes in the previously linked bugreport.
