I'm feeling very ignorant. Looking through the posts of all the forums, I don't see anything that I recognize. I have attempted to install a game or two. Synaptic. Flashplayer. Somehow, somewhere, I wind up nowhere. I know I'm doing something incorrectly. Just ain't too sure what it might be... I read the instructions for installing and I think I'm doing what it asks for and the next line reads like something isn't correct. Sorry. I don't remember the exact verbage. Anyway. Is there a tutoral that goes step by step in explaining how to use ./config ... etc.?

How did you exactly try to install them?
Also, synaptic is a package manager for debian/*buntu systems, and it's not available from the Mageia repositories. How did you install it?

Well it would be usefull if you can just simply copy&paste such a complete procedure here. Otherwise nobody can see what you actually do and where it goes wrong.
Also please post a link to the instructions that your read.

But as you mention ./config, do you try to compile software yourself via ./configure && make && make install? Is that what's not working for you?
Actually you should prefer to install software from Mageia repositories, and get familiar with that.

As a fellow newbie, let me give you some Mageia specific ways of doing stuff.

If you are looking for a software, let's say for example chromium browser, it is best to install them using "Install & Remove Software" via Mageia Control Center. Under KDE desktop environment, click on the Mageia Application Launcher Menu button > Tools > System Tools > Mageia Control Center (you will be asked for root password) > and under Software Management click on Install & Remove Software.

If you feel doing it via terminal. elevate yourself as a root user by typing

Code: Select all

su

then type

Code: Select all

urpmi chromium-browser

make sure to type

Code: Select all

exit

to go back the root user or just close the terminal because you would not want to run other commands as a root user.

If you came from MS Windows to Ubuntu then Mageia, you might be looking or downloading installers the windows way like downloading chromium.deb as an example. This is generally not recommended unless you have no other choice or you are provided step by step instructions in installing in a particular Linux distro in our case it will be something like chromium.rpm then we also have the compile from source approach which is more done by seasoned Linux users.

Ok... I click on the icon at the bottom of the screen for Mageia Control Center. I am prompted for my password, which I enter. I then have the Software Management menu. I select add/delete and wait about 10 minutes while the program determines what is installed. From the sidebar I select any choice and it seems that the items from that sidebar selection is either installed or something I can't value at the moment. I select games and there are none. Several other selections offer the same result. Documents offer the manual on how to install Mageia in every language. One other (sorry, short memory). I have looked at the resources list and have made sure every selection that makes any kind of sense is selected. At this point, I see no way to add programs to my computer that are compatable with Mageia if I have to use your system to obtain them. Very frustrating.

I don't know how to screen capture yet so I did the following in hopes it would help with understanding. This is a submenu from MControl Center with what is in those selected choices. Please excuse my smartmouth remarks...

Software Management

Accessibility - some choices (and I do squint to read sometimes...)
Archiving - nothing displayed
Communications - nothing displayed
Databases - several (I would rather drink wine & not worry about keeping it)
Development - nothing displayed
Documentation - mageia-doc-installer-(pick a language) & qt4...
Editors - many choices (don't have a clue)
Education - many choices (lots of potential in the future)
Emulators - many choices (just want to be myself...)
File tools - nothing displayed
Games - nothing displayed
Geography - marble is cool. can't use gps yet (gpsbabei-gui & viking)
Graphical desktop - nothing displayed
Graphics - nothing displayed
Monitoring - many options for keeping tabs on fish, cute girls and monkeys
Networking - nothing displayed
Office - nothing displayed
Publishing - many choices I don't value at the moment
Sciences - nothing displayed
Security - one ... kleopatra
Sound - nothing displayed
System - nothing displayed
Terminals - offers many choices (flavors?)
Text tools - a few selections (one seems selected(?)/checked
Toys - I'm not a tea fanatic
Video - nothing displayed

You need to click on the small arrow to the left of those groups that appear to be empty, in order to expand the group to see the sub-groups. Clicking on a sub-group name displays the packages in that sub-group.

To see all available packages in any group or sub-group you must first set up the online software sources:

You may wish to also change the first filter to ALL instead of Packages with GUI.

Thank you all for the help here. It changed my entire outlook because of your finger pointing. Now I need to follow up on all the other information you people put into this topic.
