Hi all,

maybe some of you have noticed it too. After the recent upgrade to virtualbox 4.3.16,
if you had an extension pack installed previously and didn't update it, all your VMs will crash during startup.
For the Mageia VMs that happens shortly after bootloader, for Windows VMs supposedly short after desktop start.

This can be easily fixed, you just need to update the extension pack to the current version.

- download current extension Pack for 4.3.16:

- cleanup, uninstall the existing one, and then install the new one:

Baah, that's too easy, and the problem is for quite a lot of users this doesn't work, as the virtualbox installer doesn't clean up properly in many cases.

mines brooke too and i cant see from that link what you are supposed to do to fix it.

ive removed my .Virtaulbox folder and reimported my vm's and reinstalled extention ack and still have a problem.

OK so again my issue was with mga3

the next thing i did was remove virtualbox from system using mga control center, including the kernel modules.

reboot

reinstall above.

now the kernel driver fails to load, for vbox support.

tries a systemctl restart vbox..... whatever it was

still no luck

so uninstalled again

downloaded the same version for mandriva 2011 from oracle, installed and it works fine.

The link only shows a similar issue where clean installation of extension pack was not possible, in answer to Claire's post.

You should probably have a look at ~/.VirtualBox/VBoxSVC.log and in the log files of the individual VMs in ~/VirtualBox\ VMs/*/Logs

How do your VMs behave exactly, and did you try without extension pack yet?

The only issue I've been having with VirtualBox has been the lack of USB device notifications to the client - TomTom may run a Linux kernel but updates have to be applied by my Windoze client but w/o the host notifying the client, it's tuff to do. This applies to any USB device and yes, I have the current Ext. Pack installed.

Thank you doctor, fixed it for me on cauldron (done it before but I always forget)
So in short a note for myself (and anyone): Get the extpack from https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads , then
(close virtualbox)

$ sudo VBoxManage extpack cleanup
$ sudo VBoxManage extpack uninstall 'Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack'
$ sudo VBoxManage extpack install *.vbox-extpack
-and results from all commands were OK.
Then for the guest side:
In the menu of the virtualbox window frame of the running client (Win XP) selecting to insert the guest addition iso in the virtual CD drive, it pops up a dialog saying it can not find it.
In that dialog choose to let it download it, and it downloads i.e http://dlc.sun.com.edgesuite.net/virtua ... 4.3.18.iso
then in next dialog tell it to insert and XP then autostarts the guest side installer. (other guests may need to be directed to start installer on that "CD")

...that said, if we just want to get the guest up quickly it worked for me to disable USB2 in the settings and remove the (wrong version) extension pack

I have been using VirtualBox with USB on one machine but having installed it on another machine need to enable USB access once more. Browsing the forums I discovered that the prorietary extension pack needs to be installed as well. Downloaded that but got an immediate failure when trying to install from Vbox manager.

The directory /usr/lib64/virtualbox/ExtensionPacks exists on the machine where the extension pack is installed and working but not on the current target machine. It looks like it is meant to be created when the tarball is exploded.

Just to be sure of clean start I used doktor5000's cleanup command, which failed more or less as expected on the missing directory.

For a workaround, what happens if you simply create that directory? As root do

Yes, I was about to try that. Done, and the result is the same so I still have to identify the missing file/directory. --cert-dir looks suspicious. Will follow up tomorrow.

I shall see about reporting this particular installation problem. Meanwhile I tried an illegal hack to get USB support; copying the installed extension pack from altair to vega. This does enable USB after a fashion. File manager access works but commandline does not because the USB drive does not appear in /run/media/<user>. I shall of course remove the offending directory from virtualbox. Section 2 of the licence agreement forbids propagation across computers. What really puzzles me is how the same version of the extension pack install correctly on altair, just a couple of weeks earlier.

As an afterthought I removed the copied extension pack and tried commandline installation instead of VBoxManager -> File -> Preferences -> Extensions

and that worked without any apparent errors. However, although a USB device appears in the Devices->USB list and can be captured and released I see no way to actually access it. I need to go back and check other threads on this topic, later; no time just now. So my installation problem is solved but leaves a question mark over the gui installation method. I have started searching through the bug reports on the Oracle site for anything related to extpack installation errors.

Not sure what you initially wanted to achieve - if you only need to forward some usb device into a VM,
you don't need the extension pack - that is only required for USB 2.0 support.

Thanks for that information - did not realize that extpack was not required. I have started a new thread on this subject but have decided to remove the VM and start again after Christmas if I can find the time.

Virtualbox can fetch new extpack but not install it. - Workaround here:
(Mageia 5)

A while ago Virtualbox got updated to 5.0.8
I realised today it was still using extpack ver 5.0.4
Virtualbox fail to update the extpack; it downloads it but errs when it tries to install it, exactly as in tarazed first post above ( viewtopic.php?p=51960#p53317 )
(When I in Virtualbox main window select menu File > Settings and then Extensions (If i translate correctly) and then try to add, OR File > Check for update, say no to 5.0.10 (i stay on mageia latest package) and it asks if i want it to install 5.0.8 extpack)

Workaround:
1) close virtualbox
2) go to where virtualbox downloaded the file: /home/morgan/.config/VirtualBox/
, and you may wan to delete elder versions of extpack there
3) in a terminal there become root and

Oracle Extension Pack 5.0.12

I have been having trouble just lately with my 32-bit VM running on a 64-bit host. It was refusing to start and the diagnostics pointed to a problem with the Oracle extension pack recently installed so I removed it and performed a cleanup using VBoxManage. I also removed all the virtualbox packages and reinstalled them. After that, re-installation of the extension pack succeeded but the VM refused to start. The diagnostics this time are difficult to interpret:

If you have upgraded VirtualBox recently, please make sure you have terminated all VMs and upgraded any extension packs. If this error persists, try re-installing VirtualBox. (VERR_PDM_DEVHLPR3_VERSION_MISMATCH).

If I then disable USB3.0 in the VM it starts right away, so this seems to indicate that the extension pack might be the source of the problem but I am not sure. It looks very much like the problem which started this thread but no longer responds to the solution offered.

Something like this happened to me too, on a different distro (Manjaro).

What fixed it for me was to rename (or alternatively backup, delete and copy back)the .vdi files in ~/VirtualBox/HardDisks/

Then delete the VM in the VB control panel - create a new one -and point it to the existing .vdi "disk".
After that I could check the USB controllers again too.

Might be worth a shot.

Redfaced apology. I just discovered that after updating to Virtualbox 5.0.14 I was still using the 5.0.12 extension pack so deleting the vdi was not going to help. Anyhow, the components now match and all is well. Sorry for the noise.

No worries :D It might still help others.
Just to clarify; the thing that worked was keeping the .vdi and delete the VM in Virtualbox and then recreate it - as in generating a new - and point it to the existing .vdi. The -vdi's were fine all the time in my case too.

(The backup stuff was only to prevent that the VB control panel should not completely erase the virtual disk during deletion so that I had an existing disk to point to.)
