I've been getting bad boots lately. I notice it when I open firefox and the curser turns from white to black. FF starts acting sluggish and goofey. No combination of key presses will restart the computer and the shutdown/restart menu items do nothing when I click on them which makes it sound like a kde issue somehow. I have to press the hard reboot button on the computer itself. Have had to do this half a dozen times this week and last week. Hoping it will go away on its own. Anyone else having this issue?

you could try opening a terminal and type "reboot"
Which version of Mageia + desktop?
Has your FF problems started after an update?

I did an online update to 4.1 not long ago.

Has your FF problems started after an update?

Seems to have, like within the last week or two.

He said update not upgrade.
I would think that means he installed using the 4.1 media and the problems started after an online update.
But I could be wrong.

So far 8 posts and we don't even know the point of origin of your issue. You could try to be a little more helpful.

you online updated which version of Mageia [ 1, 2 or 3 ] to Mageia 4.1?

My appologies. I don't understand what is meant by "point of origin".

A while back (in time) I updated Mageia 3 to 4.1. If that is not the information that is being sought, then I am not understanding the question.

so, you have upgraded to Mageia 4.1 from 3 and there were no apparent issues.
later ( after an update ) that maybe include F/F you are having problems with F/F - correct?
are any other programmes affected, eg, thunderbird, vlc , k3b ?
or just F/F?

If you start F/F from a terminal are there any errors generated?

Right, FF is the problem, then the curser turns black (from white) in FF but back to white elsewhere. A hard reboot will make everything act normal again. I'll open FF from terminal next time I reboot. vlc works fine and I don't use the other two. Dolphin works fine as best I recall.

Also try starting firefox in safe mode. In terminal run

firefox -safe-mode

this disables all plugins and addons.

After lettng it rest all night, I started the computer without rushing things. Then started ff, before I saw the post about safe mode. Terminal said:

When I went to copy the above from terminal, it closed ff.

I have been impressed with the speed at which ff runs under Mageia. Much faster than with pclinuxos, but it has been slower this past weekend which I blame on heavy traffic although that's just a guess. I'll try safe mode in a little while.

Just now, I opened a .jpg in Kolourpaint and printed it to .pdf. Then I did a second one and after that, processor activity got pretty high and stayed that way. I closed all programs and it still was active so I restarted the computer. ff seems sluggish, especially in facebook.
Edit: All that activity may have been an incoming system update. ff is running nicely under safe mode. The wrong color cursor has not appeared today at all.

After todays update, everything is running smooth as silk.
