Trying to setup Creative D1001 USB webcam on mageia 4.1 64b.
lsusb sees and reports the device.
Yet, both motion and cheese display an error similar to: ....can't find /dev/video0.
I'ld appreciate a step by step instructions as to how to set up correctly the webcam using motion detection.

Best get a different webcam.

(If I correctly remmeber, this wecam used to function in one of the earlier versions maybe mageia 2 or an entirely different distribution, on this machine. Thus I believed I could find a way to make it work.
Any explanation why there is no video0??)

Because no driver is loaded (or it's builtin to the kernel), as you can see from the above output. Or it's missing the correct option. Did you actually read the links I've posted?

Maybe you can check with as root

what's in the logs.
Or what happens if you run as root

and then plugin the webcam?

Well, there is this http://sourceforge.net/projects/epcam/s ... rce=navbar

But I will offer no opinion on how it will work for you. I would bet, since there have been no upgrades since 2011, that it would require some work to get it working.

I also looked at the links trying to install "epcam" which, apparently, would support the device. However trying to follow the enclosed instructions in the "install" , it failed to pass the "make" phase with the following report:

You could try to install v4l-devel and try to put up a symlink for that file like explained in http://stackoverflow.com/questions/5842 ... untu-11-04
But this header file mentioned above must be required from pretty old code ...
