[SOLVED] Skype is out of date - update is available

Postby Rowan » Aug 3rd, '14, 12:18

Hello all
Tonight we found that we are unable to log in to skype and I have read that all skypes prior to 4.3 have been retired as of last friday (1 August). Is any body able to confirm this?
If it is correct can anybody tell me exactly (blow by blow) how to update to 4.3 on Mageia 4? - My wife is getting very grouchy because she can't talk to her family back home and I want some peace. Unfortunately Mageia is not one of the skype supported distros.

Thanks in advance
Rowan

For Skype we have a MAQeia: viewtopic.php?f=36&t=1121
The first post has simple instructions to install latest version of skype (4.3.0.37)
Skype is working just fine here.

I was using skype 4.2.something just today. It has been logged in since the last time I rebooted the system, and I was not kicked off.

I did attempt to start skype in my windows 7 VM and was forced to upgrade. Similarly, I tried to start it in OpenSUSE 13.1 VM and was forced to upgrade.

So, I upgraded using the Cauldron version - and, BTW, doktor, you need to update your directions. You direct people to use the command:

urpmi ftp://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/os/Linux/distr/m ... noarch.rpm

But that has changed and is now:

urpmi ftp://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/os/Linux/distr/m ... noarch.rpm

The installation of the new version happened without incident, the new version started without incident and appears to be working without incident.

I update the links only every now and then - most people don't actually read that MAQeia, and will directly post to the forums asking questions answered in there. So I've decided to not invest more time into it. And sometimes seems one expects just too much when it comes to adaptation - copy the link, go to the FTP and get the latest link ...
But I digress - just updated the link.

Hi, skype version 4.3.0.37-3 upgrade doesn't work on my mageia 4.2. No skype connection since 4 days
Connection failed. (I came back to 4.2... no way for it too)
Any other suggestion? :?:

Mageia 4.2? Where did you get that?

4.3.0.37 works fine here since over a month. Did you quit and start skype again for the update to be effective?
For your question, please refer to viewtopic.php?f=36&t=1121
Which of the steps proposed there for crashes on skype startup did you try already?

Thank's for your quick answer doktor5000. Sorry for my 4.2, too bigs fingers.... ;) It should be 4.1.
I had to erase all trace of skype in my system, install from package again, place the skype item too my menu (the installation didn't place it) and try...it works now.
Best regard's
