Hi,

I bought a book and what a great book it is. It's called "Linux Command Line and Shell Scripting Bible". While readind the book was explaining the set command. So I types set and was shocked by the output! It looked like a long list of code, not like environment variables at all. I had to set scroll back to unlimited. Changing from 1k lines to 5k, then 20k etc, didn't help. It scrolled right off and gone. So when I went unlimited I was able to see it. I saved the session after a fresh reboot from power down.

I assumed I had a variable that was set to something???? No telling what. Here is where it goes stupid. I loaded it in kwrite and it said a line was longer than the allowed 4096 characters. It continues on down and looks like code. It goes on for miles! I didn't use set to set any variables. I just typed "set" to see them. I powered down to clear them hoping that would fix it but I till get this extremely odd output from the set command.

Anyway here is the part that goes from variables to whatever it is. Is this normal??? Systemd changes? Corrupt disk file?

Ok, I checked the laptop, same thing, I keep forgetting about that, compare them. What is the deal with "set"?

Ok, so I googled part of the string, it is part of a file used for bash completion. Should it be part of the output of the set command?

Yeah, I read that. But this isn't a form that can be reused in a script etc. It splatters all over
and is not a nice little list. Fedora 20 64 does the exact same thing so I am assuming it's normal.

But what was the change that caused this?

After a lot of reading I see that konsole is not running is posix mode.
When I do:

bash --posix

in konsole the set command acts as expected and it also sets POSIXLY_CORRECT=y. I haven't a clue if konsole should be starting in posix mode or if there is a reason by design it's not.
When in posix mode "set" just lists the variables and I don't know if that is all it should do when not in posix mode. This is what helped me figure it out:

If no options or arguments are supplied, set displays the names and values of all shell variables and functions, sorted according to the current locale, in a format that may be reused as input for setting or resetting the currently-set variables. Read-only variables cannot be reset. In POSIX mode, only shell variables are listed.

From that it appears set may be acting normally. All of you Unix/Linux gurus who've been at it a long time probably know all of this.

Would someone with more knowledge about bash/konsole please explain?


P.S.

This is a great book for you guys (and girls) that want to learn more than "just enough to get you by". If I knew nothing and this was my first day in konsole I'd be well on my way to feeling like I knew something about it.

Confused about your actual question. Do you still want to know why so much environment variables are set?

Check /etc/profile.d/ and /etc/bash_completion.d/ if you have that enabled.
Mostly those are to add colours to various command output, provide more information (when e.g. changing to git repositories) or they are set by the desktop environment, various daemons like ssh-agent or things like that.

The major part is probably from git and provides bash completion helps for git usage.

I was reading a book, he said type "set" to see EV's. Well mine went on forever, not a nice neat list. Then I found out about bash completion and Posix mode. Once you put bash in posix mode you get a neat little list of EV's. At first I thought something was wrong because one variable was 100's of lines long it seemed.'

It's all good now as long as that is how it is supposed to be, git and bash completion etc.

You should be aware about this, as bash then behaves otherwise, and most of the files it usually processes ( /etc/profile, ~/.bash_profile oor ~/.bashrc ) will not be sourced during startup, hence you only got that short list.
