[DONE] sudden Desktop failure

Mageia 4 - kernel 3.12.20-desktop

Mate desktop environment

Something happened to my system this morning after logging out and in. There appeared to be some kind of conflict at the Desktop level. Some of the settings seemed to be ignored, like terminal and other display fonts, and images for several panel icons were changed. My chosen wallpaper image failed to appear and the background did not respond to a right-click. The background is fixed at the default Mageia wallpaper. Items in the mate settings window misbehave. Either the selection fails on a timeout or the system goes into a race condition as if an application is being spawned and respawned at high frequency. At the same time all the window decorations on displayed applications disappear. The only way out at that point is to go to console mode and reboot. When things do go wrong a continuous stream of fault messages appear in dmesg:
Code: Select all
[  865.344717] caja[7628]: segfault at 4 ip 00007f676eb85241 sp 00007fffb77418a0 error 4 in libcairo.so.2.11200.16[7f676eb62000+119000]

Straight after logging in the tail of dmesg looks like this:

In addition I cannot run any applications from the system menus or from the panel or from a terminal once the caja segfault loop occurs. Shell commands work in a terminal but nothing else.

Neither my laptops or the spare desktop machine exhibit any of this behaviour after logout/login. On the main machine I also tried another user (a dummy) and the Mate desktop was similarly affected. As far as I can see KDE is not affected but I am not accustomed to working in KDE so cannot say for sure.

Since a dummy user is also affected it would seem that the problem lies below user level.

Ideally I would reinstall at this stage but I have very little spare time. I need this machine for production work and have a tight deadline to meet.

Have you tried to reinstall the package libcairo containing libcairo.so.2.11200.16 ?
Code: Select all
urpmi --replacepkgs --replacefiles libcairo2 lib64cairo2

No, although I wondered about doing something like that. I have recorded that command in my notebook but it is too late to recover my system. I bit the bullet and reinstalled from scratch. Currently I am having a problem with dkms not rebuilding the nvidia code at reboot time so I am stuck with kernel 3.12.8. Started a thread on mageia-discuss.

Thanks

Seems you're jumping quite fast from one topic to another. Why a thread on mageia-discuss, why not ask here?

Anyways, please mark the thread accordingly by editing the topic of the first post and prefix it by [DONE], thanks

Will do.

I am never quite sure which place is the best to discuss a particular problem.

Well, it does not improve when spreading one issue across multiple locations ... the only thing that increases is the clutter.

Shame... Thanks to doctor5000, notified me about this topic but i can see nothing can be done. If you didn't reinstall we can try to fix this, altough i suspect from Nvidia regarding your dmesg log. If you enconuter similiar problem with your new install please pm me after creating new forum topic. Thanks.
