How do I boot live Mageia, before my system boots win 8.1. ?

Postby Kirsty » Jun 7th, '14, 18:54

I got a new HD but win 8.1. is pre-installed. When starting up I don't see the ESC-possibility to choose an USB-port and start a Mageia live session.

I have multiple linux distro's on an USB-stick, inclucing the live Mageia version.

hi

more info would be helpful: mobo type?
if you look up your units specs on line it should give you the mobo type.
go to the makers site and check there to see if there is a special key sequence to get to the UEFI settings.
enable legacy options if available and set usb to first boot as desired

That's CPU, We mean motherboard make/model. ;)

I know on gigabyte mobo's if you press F12 during post boot it will display what device you wish to boot from.

Hi

1st page will be fine as I understand your arrow keys dont work which would normally mean you cant shift between screens.
unless you can use your number pad [ turn off num lock ]?

Hi

Please remove left hand side cover of your unit - unless it is a laptop? and advise maker and model of main board.
It will be printed in large letters.

I have pushed num lock and I have access to my arrow keys but...... when I want to save the settings, strangely I can no longer toggle between 'Yes' and 'No'.

I have a desktop, Acer, BIOS:P12-BO

I have put 'removable media' as first boot option (unless tthe changes have not been saved). I need to test that but I'm getting closer.

hi,

Good to hear " progress " is being made.
It sounds like your keyboard is part of the issue and has an incompatability with your bios. maybe wrong keymap
Do you have another keyboard to try?

anyway, keep us posted

Hello

I use my old keyboard. I have checked the changes in my BIOS and it has accepted them.

The first boot option is: "removeable media" but.... when starting up, it does not show the boot menu of my multisystem USB stick. The system goes straight back to win 8.1.

What program are you using to create your multisystem USB stick?
At least two programs are known not to work with Mageia Hybrid ISO's.

Hi Kirsty,

How recent is your motherboard ?
If it is less than 3 years old, in the bios menu tree there should be an option to enable / Disable UEFI boot option,
or Enable / disable legacy bios.
Sometimes only 1 option needs to be set, others both, so there may be some tinkering needed there.
Check also that boot option USB HDD may be available and if so, try that option also.

Good to know you are getting there.

p.s. I did a google search on your bios but no valid returns, so it looks like you will have to do all the heavy lifting.
p.p.s. In my unit at home if I remove the USB device and then reboot, the bios changes back to internal HDD and I have to reset bios to boot to USB, every time I want to boot from a usb device.

Sorry, but you're omitting all necessary information to help further.

To what did you switch, and how did you switch? What Mageia image are you using currently?

Hello,

the software guiding the multiboot on the USB stick is 'MultiSystem'. I downloaded MultiSystem, executed it and placed some linux distro's on the USB.
The Mageia image is Mageia 4 x86-64. I also have Bodhilinux and Manjaro on the USB stick.

I have access to the BIOS, I'm able to use the arrow keys.

My first boot option is 'removeable media'. It is different then my older BIOS because I don't have the option to boot from 'USB'.
I suppose that 'removeable media' is USB but I start to doubt that. I'll give more info on the BIOS options in a later post.

Hi Kirsty

3rd photo very helpful

disable secure boot and then retry booting to your usb device.

The USB device boots on other units- correct?

Hi Kirsty

I was reading an article about Microsoft + NSA - [ thanks Yankee495 ] and foundt his info that might be of use to you.
I guess you you will have to turn " Secure Boot " back on in your bios.

boot to windows8 then : " Open UEFI by pressing on the Start button and then clicking on F10. Go to the Boot Order screen and Move USB to the top of the list "

see how that goes,

another snippet that may be of interest: http://news.softpedia.com/news/Windows- ... 4009.shtml

it seems in"secure boot " may be turned back on when running Win8 or updating it, so be aware that you may have to switch in"secure boot " to off each time you want to boot your Usb if you ever use Win8

There seem to be a lot of problems with win 8 and win 8.1 for linux users.

Microsoft has made it more difficult for dual boot or live boot users. Darn you Microsoft....

When pressing F12 I got the boot screen giving me the choice to boot...... Windows Boot Manager, but normally my
first boot option is 'Removeable Device'.

First boot option: Removable Device,
Second boot option: Win Boot Manager,
third boot option: CD and DVD
fourth boot option: LAN

Secure boot is on.
