Annoying "feature" - what to do?

Postby jiml8 » May 21st, '14, 19:48

System: Mageia 4 with KDE and compiz. Video is nvidia with driver downloaded from nvidia.

This behavior is consistent with VLC, gwenview, and google earth. I have not noticed this behavior with other programs, though I tend to use the other programs somewhat differently so might not notice. This behavior specifically does NOT occur with kmplayer or vmware workstation.

Here is what happens. Note that on the KDE desktop in the upper right-hand corner is a gadget labeled "Desktop". Clicking on this gadget causes all windows to be minimized, and causes a drop-down menu to appear with some choices on it. So far so good.

Now, open a program (VLC, gwenview, or google earth) such that the window covers the entire screen, but is NOT in full-screen mode. In other words, the window has a frame and the frame has the close gadget on it.

Now, click the close gadget to close the program or window.

It is not the close gadget that you get; you get the "Window" gadget that is on the KDE desktop, which is behind the close gadget. This causes all windows to be minimized, and the program you were trying to close continues running. Click the "Window" gadget again; windows are restored. Now click the close gadget on the program you are trying to close, and you do get that gadget and the program closes.

Now, when VLC or gwenview is open with the window maximized, toggle the program into full-screen mode. Now toggle back into the maximized window. Now click the close gadget. Now, the program closes.

Again, kmplayer and vmware workstation work properly here. Most other programs I do not open with maximized windows, so I cannot tell you if this happens with them.

It looks to me like the z-order of gadgets is sometimes getting confused on opening. I have no idea why this would be true of some programs but not others, but it is quite consistent on my system. I don't know if this is a Mageia issue, a KDE issue, a compiz issue, an xorg issue, a VLC or gwenview issue, or what, exactly.

Has anyone else seen this, or have any idea what is causing it? It is new with Mageia 4; I did not see it on earlier releases.

Why you need to use compiz ??? it's dead project and kde have own integrated effects built inside, because it's dead nobody will fix those issues never from compiz.

Well, I guess that is my choice to make, now isn't it. :x If the built-in KDE compositing works for you, then by all means use it. I personally find the way it works to be very annoying.

And compiz remains under active development; it certainly is not a dead project.
