Day two with Mageia 4. on a Gateway LT3120u

So far it has fought me every step of the way but I expected that. Se my Intro.

Even though I specified Cinnamon during the setup, it defaulted to KDE and on top of that it spread the desktop between the external monitor and the netbook display thereby hiding all the controls. Only figured that out when I noticed that the mouse would disappear off the side of the screen and opened the netbook and found them. Spent almost an hour hunting down the display settings and getting everything on the external monitor.

Had a flashing red ! mark that took me to an update screen so I told it to update. 4 hours of downloads!! Really?!? On top of 2 hours to download the ISO and 2 more to make the boot-able USB and 3 hours to install??

A couple hours searching the wiki and I finally found instructions on how to switch the desktop to Cinnamon but I keep getting told to "insert core release medium". So far I have found nothing useful in the wiki about "core release medium".

I have already been told that the "Core Release" should be the same as the USB I did the install from, but that didn't work.

I have gone into SETTINGS for "removable storage" and turned on the automatic mount settings.

Now the USB shows up there as "Mageia-4-x86_64." Clicking the "HOME" does not show the USB as one of the "DEVICES" connected to the computer.

When I try to "apply" Cinnamon (or any other desktop) I still get asked to "Please insert the medium named "Core Release" .

???????

P.S. I don't do terminal stuff. Read my intro to understand. If I have to do terminal stuff to get it to run, it will likely need terminal stuff to keep it running and that defeats the reason I am trying to do the installation(s) in the first place.

You should remove the installation media (USB/CDROM) as package sources:

https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Software_man ... ia_sources
http://doc.mageia.org/mcc/4/en/content/ ... media.html

If the mirror being selected by the mirrorlist is slow, you can select a specific mirror:

The short answer is "don't bother". The long answer is https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Removing_packages

As mentioned on the linked page, a GUI for managing orphans is qt4urpm. It is available in the repository and can be installed using the software manager.

https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Removing_pac ... ge_Orphans

But use it with care. Not all orphan packages are unnecessary - some could be essential.

Humnn,, For my own purposes it would be good to be able to clean the orphans out since I will be adding and removing things for test purposes. This will have to be something for another time.

For Installations for the reason I posted in my intro, it should be unnecessary since once it is setup and running, my older friends are probably not going to adding or removing very many things.

Ok,, I am either going to have to learn to get rid of orphans
OR
Increase the size of the Mageia disk partition.

OR both..
