[SOLVED] Brother DCP-7055W Printer Installation Problem

I have previously installed this printer in a 64-bit version of Mageia 3 KDE. However, I have tried unsuccessfully four times to install it on an old 32-bit Dell laptop (uninstalling betwen attempts). Brother's website now provides an installer program that automatically locates the appropriate driver files and downloads and installs them. In running the program twice I had one total failure and one installation that showed the printer, but without ever being able to print.

To eliminate the possibility of problems in the installation script, I twice installed them manually. The printer shows as being installed, but when I attempt to print (either test or from LibreWriter), the printer starts but never prints anything.

Opening error log reveals only one error: Unknown directive BrowseAddress on line 18 of /etc/cups/cupsd.conf.

Checking on my 64-bit laptop I see that this error appears in the error log as well -- without interfering with the printing. In fact the conf file and the "server configuration" are the same on both machines. So there must be some other problem.

Despite failing to print a test print the CUPS frontend shows: "POST /printers/DCP7055W HTTP/1.1" 200 384 Print-Job successful-ok.

System with problem: Dell Inspiron 600M (Pentium M), 1 GB RAM; Mageia 4 KDE

PS I just noticed that I posted this in the general forum and that there is now a printer subforum. If a moderator can move this or let me know if there is a way I can do so I would appreciate it.

How is the printer connected to your PC? When you say you installed it manually, how exactly did you do that?

When you go to CUPS frontend http://localhost:631/printers and check the device URI of your printer, what does it say currently?

Oops, yes, I ned to say that the printer is connected to a USB port.

By manually I simply mean that I went step-by-step through the installation of the CUPSWrapper and lpr driver rather than relying on the installation script: http://support.brother.com/g/b/downloadlist.aspx?c=eu_ot&lang=en&prod=dcp7055w_us_eu_as&os=127

I am not sure why but it seems a pair of packages was missing in my install of Mageia. Upon opening "Configure Printer" on the Tools Menu, Mageia indicated packages were needed. Once installed the printer began functioning -- and I am a happy camper once again.
