[SOLVED] All my desktop icons missing

Howdy everyone,

I turned on my computer this morning and all my icons on my desktop are missing. The desktop folder looks ok and I did some refreshes of the desktop also a restart in case something didn't load right.
I checked desktop properties and didn't see anything obvious. It simply looks like all the icons were deleted. I am not sure wether I can just copy them back out of the desktop folder and fix it that way or not.

Thanks duder

Hi Duder,

is your taskbar there?

not something like you have the wrong desktop selected?

benmc,

No only the icons are missing, everything else looks OK. I did click all the screens to be sure that wasn't it. I was temped to just try and copy them back on the desktop and see if that would work.
But sometimes when you take shortcuts it comes back to haunt you later.

I didn't have a lot of time to fool with it this morning, It more of an annoyance than a major issue.

thanks duder

If you use KDE you may try the following:

  • click on the desktop
  • press 'Alt+D,Alt+S'
  • select "View -> Layout: Folder" in the Desktop-Settings dialog
  • apply changes

Magfan,

OK that did it, Thanks. I had to select it a couple of times and save and exit.
I was hoping it was easy, I do remember this happen after the last time I played Quake3 Areana.

Thanks again.

I spoke too soon.
I turned on the computer this morning and my icons are missing again.
I went through the process again. I had to toggle the "folder" option to another option and save. Then
switch it back to "folder" and save then the icons appear. I logged out then logged in and the're gone again.

That seems to be an issue with my session or profile.

This problem is with kde icon cache you need to remove it and then all icons should go back to your desktop.
Go to icewm and open terminal and paste this command,rm -rf .kde4/cache-localhost

I fixed it, AARGG! I first removed all the multipule screens so I wouldn't get confussed.
Then I noticed that the little desktop tab in the upper right hand side of the screen was actually set out about an inch from the side. It was normal before and only noticed it when I rememoved the extra 3 screens.
So that made me suspiuos the resolution was wrong. The resolution was set to max so I lowered it to the next lower one and my icons returned.
I don't get it, but it works now.

I am pretty sure that playing Quake3 may have reset my screen resolution the last time I payed and once I restarted the computer my icons disappeared.

Thanks everyone...duder

Well its been awhile and the problem came back again after playing Quake. I just reset the resolution and the icons are back, just like magfan says. Now it doesn't matter if I play Quake the resolution pretty much resets its self each time I boot up.

I installed Gnome desktop and what a mess. I then installed Mate and it's almost exactly like KDE and so far has worked fine without any
Shenanigans.
