Boot options for Geforce FX 5200 Mageia 4

Postby FujiMan » May 6th, '14, 03:02

Hi,

I'm using Mageia 4 gnome boot cd on a HP m380n,1.5g ram, GeForce FX 5200 with 128MB video memory. Video is extremely sluggish.

I've tried the no ahci and no apic options in boot screen. The motherboard bios doesn't seem to have options of turning these off.

Any suggestions for boot options?

Thanks in advance,
FujiMan

I have a desktop computer with Mageia 4 (KDE) and the same video card. All video is smooth and the overall response is snappy.

Are you using the nvidia video driver?

I'm only using the boot cd, as I'm trying it out before installing.
I think it is not detecting or using the correct driver for the video card.
I have not loaded or installed any drivers.
I can get to a command line on another terminal, so which driver do I need to install?

In the meantime, I'll download the KDE CD iso and see if there is any difference...

I tried the KDE disk. It looks like the video card was properly detected, and desktop worked as expected.
I was able to select items without strange artifacting/screen garbage or menus disappearing.

So, my question, what is the difference between the two desktops that would cause video anomalies in the GNOME desk and not the KDE one?
What is the correct driver/package for the GeForce FX 5200 if I can pop to another terminal (the command line to retrieve/install?)
Has GNOME become too advanced for an old card as the 5200?

I have no experience with GNOME, so I can not answer your questions. I have always run KDE with Mageia.

I would not think so.

Hi

Since the KDE live disk works ok? you might have a dud gnome disk.
In KDE if you now enable online repositories you could install the Gnome D.E.
install task-gnome
you could then log out - do not reboot , select Gnome as your desktop, there is a pen+paper icon at the login screen, click on it and select Gnome.

see how that goes.
when you power off or reboot you will of course lose the Gnome D.E.

It seems you now need to use the legacy 173 series nvidia driver for your card, see the list here..
http://www.nvidia.com/object/IO_32667.html

I'm not sure when that list was last updated, they do drop support in the newer drivers for older cards occasionally. Current driver in mga4 is 331.49 but the legacy ones are also available.

Please create a bug report on mageia bugzilla if you find that cures it for you.
