Question about the "boot" menu

Postby bdan56 » May 2nd, '14, 05:29

Hello to everyone. Newbie here. I just installed Mageia 4 this evening. Had been using Ubuntu 12.04LTS but really wanted to change things up. WIthout being long winded on my first posting, let me say that the download and subsequent burning to DVD of the Mageia-4 Live cd went off just fine. I did install it onto my hard drive after a brief tour of this new (to me) OS.. so far so good. I certainly like the look and feel of this "new" OS. My only question and one is on the initial "boot up" of the computer. Before I was only displayed a boot menu for lack of better words, if I had selected to boot off of a cd/usd or other device.. I'm use to turning my computer on and the desktop appears shortly thereafter..

Now with this "new" Magelia OS of mine, a "boot menu" selection ( if that's the best description) appears, then after a brief moment, the Magelia desktop appears. Is this normal?
I only have ONE partition on my hard drive. I had the install erase and utilize the entire HD since I did not have anything of any real use left on the Ubuntu partition..

So that's the question. It's late for me, been a long day, and I've called myself searching in these forums, the WIKI and release notes, even read the HTML version of the installation proceedures again, but none of that addresses what I think is a simple question..

So that's all I got for now. I think I will enjoy this version of Linux just have some learning to do.. feel free to chime in and TIA

booker. :D

Hello and welcome to Mageia.

The boot menu comes on at start and is defaulted to boot Mageia after about 20 sec or so.
You can if you wish make the delay down to 1 sec through the Mageia Control Centre => boot tab

If you have another operating system that you are weaning yourself off, or you have more than one O/S because some programmes don't translate well between O/Ses or are not supported on your preferred O/S, you can select them from the menu and boot to the other O/S if and when you need to.
Doesn't apply to you as you have erased your drive completely and installed Mageia.

Also, later, if you have more than one kernel from updates, all available kernels will be listed. This can be a good thing if a kernel update comes with a spanner that gets into the works and " screws things up ". If this happens you can boot to the previous kernel that worked.

I'm sure there are other events that will required choosing other options in the boot menu.

regards
