Expanding an item in a tree is difficult

It is very difficult to expand a tree with the mouse. In rpmdrake it is not possible to expand the tree items with the mouse nor the keyboard.
If I select an item, it is highlighted. If I select a second item, the first will stay colored, but with a lower intensity.
Double click on the items has no effect on expanding the tree.
Only if I leave the window and re-enter at the desired item to expand, the ">" will turn blue and with a mouse click the item expands, but only every odd time.

I have Mageia 4 with latest updates, and am using xfce.

Cannot reproduce here. Also with the keyboard you can expand via + key (numpad) and collapse via - key (numpad).

What gtk theme do you use currently?

I have RedmondXP theme and "Focus follows mouse"
How to reproduce :
Open rpmdrake and select "Archiving"
Moved the cursor to the left out of rpmdrake, and back in again on "Communications". Notice the faint selection of "Communications"
out_and_in.png
rpmdrake out an in with mouse
out_and_in.png (27.5 KiB) Viewed 906 times

Second time the mouse moved out and in rpmdrake. Now the ">" in front of "Communications" is colored.
out_and_in_again.png
rpmdrake out and in again
out_and_in_again.png (25.15 KiB) Viewed 906 times

Now you can left-click everywhere you want, the "Communications" is always expanded.

rpmdrake wrong item expanded

I have this problem also with nautilus. The directory with the colored ">" will open if I click /double-click on another directory.

Then please try with another GTK theme first.

In the "Window Manager" settings I changed in the "Style" tab to the "Default" theme, and in the "Focus" tab to "Click to focus" and "Raise window on click", so back to default settings, I think.
But the same result, as mentioned in my earlier post.

I can confirm this behavior. It also happens in eclipse tree views. In rare cases I have the chance to "hunt" for a tiny area just a bit before and below the small triangle in front of a marked item to open it. Once I click on it the item opens and shows all its leaves. But then I have to use the keyboard arrows to select a leaf (or another item). If I click with the mouse before using the keyboard the item closes again. I have the impression that there is a "magic" pixel which is very difficult to find on a high resolution monitor. Actually, I had this problem already under mga3. Now I am using: mga4, KDE, oxygen.

eclipse also uses GTK, no? Maybe it's an issue with oxygen. So if you can reproduce it, then best report it with some clear screenshots and assign the bug to Hugo Pereira Da Costa.
There's only loosely related bug I've seen during a short search: https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5703
