(SOLVED) replaced harddisk, now only boots off DVD

OK so used clonezilla to backup my corsair 120GB SSD and the restored to a neutron 240 GTX

MGA3 64bit install bang uptodate

used gparted to resize the home to take advantage of the remaining space.

then harddisk acts like theres no bootblock

can boot from DVD and select boot from harddisk OK

have used DVD rescue mode to re-install boot block

have done upgrade with no changes to re-install bootblock

and have used MGA control center to alter boot to re-install bootblock

still acts like theres no MBR on disk

can anyone make any suggestion what to try next.

I suppose that you have confirmed that this disk is set as the boot device in the system BIOS.

in my bios i can pic a specific disk to boot off via F8

Can you chroot to the cloned system and run a grub shell, then reinstall grub, at least stage 1 ?

tried that several times, with no Joy.

what i did try that sheds some light, but does not cure problem,
is if i switch bios into IDE mode away from AHCI mode it does boor, the MBR presents the boot menu,
but subsequently hangs with the kernel command line, and UUID strings from harddisk.

at no point before did this system run in IDE mode.

if i boot from DVD and then select boot from harddisk, in IDE mode it also hangs,
whereas if i boot from DVD and select boot from harddisk, in AHCI mode system behaves as it did before.

Im going to try a complete DVD reinstall tonight, if this does not address the problem,
im sending the GTX back to amazon as incompatible with my motherboard,

which is an ASUS crosshair V formula, first gen, about 3-4 years old now.

FWIW, just want to point out the obvious - you have made sure to put the new UUIDs in /etc/fstab and in the grub config,
or you made sure that you set the UUIDs of the old partitions to the new ones?

Not that this matters for the bootloader AFAIK, but still ...

ive never had to mess about with UUID's before with clonezilla

restore a previous clone, and it just works.

and i have checked blkid and fstab and all UUID's are the same.

problem is that ahci mode does not seem to be able to retrieve the MBR.

OK, so i feel stupid, but ill share so others might avoid that.....

dont overclock your CPU, while it might work, you might start getting disk errors,

and then find that the replacment does not load the MBR
