I am trying to get my multifunction scanner to work. It is a Brother MFC-J6710W. I don't know what happened as it was working in the past and I have not changed or installed anything new.

I have reinstalled the scan software from Brother and checked that /etc/udev/rules.d/60libsane.rules has been correctly edited so a non-root user can use the scanner.
sane-find-scanner finds the scanner and it is listed in lsusb
I can scan from my scanner to my computer using the scan key

But, scanimage -L says no scanner is connected even when I try from root.

Everything is plugged in and I can print to the mutltifunction printer/scanner.

Not sure what to do next. Xsane cannot find it. I have even rebooted twice.

So after more hair pulling, I found that the dll.conf file in /etc/sane.d did not have the brother scanner in it, so there appeared to be no backend.
I ran /opt/brother/scanner/brscan4/setupSaneScan4.
this is installed with the scanner driver, but did not automatically update the dll.conf.
Once done the scanner is found by scanimage -L

I have no idea why the reference to the brother4 scanner was either removed from dll.conf or an old copy of it overwrote what was there so that the scanner failed to be found. Maybe gremlins.
Anyway it's working and that's all I want 8-)
