OK, just as test, I downloaded the ISO image of the Mageia 4 LiveCD GNOME, and booted into it.
Looked OK, BUT, noticed several graphical "artifacts" on screen. And when I click on the power
symbol in upper right corner, I got a blob of various colors and sybols, but luckily could just make
out the selectors for the functions.

So, this has begged several questions on my part, and yes I am sorry I have not "searched for them", but
I will be asking several questions that I really would like answered. So, her goes:

1. Based on the data provided by my sig, I tend to believe that I DO NOT have a beefy enough video card
to run the GNOME desktop (at least GMOME 3) on mymachine. If so, what is minimum required to run it
properly.

2. I am running the KDE desktop, and would like to experiment with at the least MATE. Is there somewhere
I can find screenshots of Mageia 4 with the various desktops running? I sort of got to see GNOME 3, so I
am primarilty interested in MATE, Cinnamon, Xfxe, LXDE, and E17.

3. As to the Cinnamon mentioned in item 2, I have SEVERE reservations with that one anyway, as in a
previously tested distro (non-Mageia) I tried the Cinnamon desktop, and OMG what a mess. I LITERALLY
had to hit power switch and reboot that way as I had NO way out of it.
So, as with GNOME 3, I am tending to believe that maybe even Cinnamon has too high of a hardware
requirement compared to my current system.

So, basically screenshots of MATE, Xfce, LXDE, E17, and the hardware requirements for GNOME 3 and
Cinnamon are what I am looking for.

Any assistance here would be GREATLY appreciated. As I am very interested in Linux, and would like to
check out more stuff other than just the KDE desktop.

P.S. Just in case it mayhave bearing or just may "clear things up" a little, as mention in item 3, I
had SEVERE issues with Cinnamon and the distro I was testing. That distro was PCLinuxOS KDE
(absolute lastes release). Just in case that may help. :roll:

I am using the AGP version of the video card you have running Mageia 4 happily with KDE so I think your video card is OK. However, the 1 GB of RAM could be a problem. I have 4 GB on my machine. 1 GB of RAM seems small for a modern linux distribution..

hi

regarding point 1.
running kde on a 128m card i had mouse droppings on screen.[ a persistant trail of dots wherever the mouse went ]
changing the card fixed this issue.
curiously, putting the "suspect "card into another unit doesnt have the mouse droppings. go figure.
a combination of mobo / graphics / display maybe. also 512m , slow but steady.

regarding point 2.

if you have the hdd space you can install all of the available desktops- approx 8.3G required for all
install via MCC by search string task- [ insert D.E here ] eg "task-kde"
when installed, to switch desktops log-out and at the log-in screen click the "pencil and paper " icon. choose your D.E and login

fortunately if you decide you dont like any particular D.E. you can later uninstall it in that same way

i use kde as a preference but have also used xfce.
everyones likes are different.
what does it for you may drive someone else bonkers

Removing a "task-xx" package removes just that package (which only serves to install other packages) it does not remove the packages that were installed as dependencies. It does, however, make those dependencies orphans, which can be removed with the "urpme --auto-orphans" command, but read this before doing so:

As described in that wiki page removing orphans must be done with great care.

Yes, I too would simply LOVE to have more memory...
But, most unfortunately the MOBO in the Dell Dimension 2350 I have can only take a max. of 1 GB.

As to video artifacting in kDE, none. It appears in my machine a 128MB vid card, 1GB RAM, and a 2.2GHz P4
work extremely well together.

As stated in OP, I only experienced artifacting in GNOME 3 in Mageia 4. And also, extreme messy artifacting under PCLinuxOS and Cinnamon combo. Strange, considering Cinnamon and MATE are basically forks of GNOME 2, Cinnamon took a power dump on machine under PCLOS, but MATE flew like a champ,

So, as alternative desktop environment I may install MATE. And, just for the :lol:

also LXDE. The only others that sort of peak the ol interest meter are E17 and RazorQT.

Anybody have thoughts on those "choices"?
As in:
1. MATE
2. LXDE
3. RazorQT
4. E17

Simply install them and try them. Wouldn't waste time on LXDE, as that will be abandoned soon, they have merged with razorqt.

OK. Now THAT tidbit I did find QUITE interesting. That LXDE is basically being folded into Razor-Qt. Don't believe I have read that one anywhere.

OK, since as I stated much earlier, I had issues with GNOME 3 and MAJOR issues with Cinnamon, I would like a GNOME-ish desktop also available I will install MATE. And see how that goes.

Cinnamon is a fork of GNOME 3, not GNOME 2, so is likely to have the same hardware requirements as GNOME 3. Having said that, there's a "Cinnamon 2D" option, which might be a bit less demanding.

I'd suggest giving Xfce a try. It was designed to be a lightweight alternative to other desktops, so should work well on your hardware, and is quite similar to GNOME-2 in look and feel.

Just tried a several minutes ago to install MATE via task-mate.

Got a conflict error concerning the package: mate-media-gstreamer-1.6.1-2.1.mga4.i586.rpm

Did some research and found that that package uses ALSA , and NOT PuleAudio, so I am now in process of having disabled PulseAudio, and had to of course logout/log back in.

Will now attempt the install again.

Will post results soon... I hope.....

Umm, err, I just noticed this...after posting (of course): :shock:

The MATE package version is: 1.6.0-8.1
And the conflicting (and I am guessing already installed?) package is: 1.6.1-2.1

Um, OK, I am HOPING this is what is the cause, and of course am seriously hoping there is an easy fix. :?:

OK, I am officially confused.
Just checked, and there is no mate media gstreamer installed anywhere. So, I am now proposing a new theory..(more than likely this is as they say SWAG) bute here goes, I hope, the package ages installed by the task and the mate gstreamer are not same version, and maybe in conflict?

Now, can someone please help with this screwy error I keep getting when just tryin gto install MATE desktop environment?
I honestly have not quite grasped what the "conflict" is. And it is indeed driving me nuts (OK, maybe not a drive, more like a very short putt).

OK, before I call it a night.
I am SERIOUSLY contemplating download the MATE v1.8 Installer RPM package from MATE and seeing if it will install.
Yes, I know BAD IDEA, but I really, really want to get MATE installed on here.
I will wait before jumping to the choice outlined, as I wish to know if there is a "safer" alternative for me.

No, that is because of the fact that software can only be installed as root, and you tried to run it as normal user.

No. You should first understand the commands you're trying to run, and a bit about software management.
Please check our software management MAQeia for more information on software and package management.

The point of the task-mate metapackage is to install all required dependencies.

doktor5000, when I use MCC>Install and Remove Software, I do so after it prompts me for ROOT password, so NO I ma installing as root ONLY. The task-mate is having issues with 1 package which is basically killing it off.

like so:

- task-mate-1.6.0-8.1.mga4.noarch (due to conflicts with mate-media-gstreamer-1.6.1-2.1.mga4.i586)

In ALL other distros I have tried, the task-mat meta-package worked FLAWLESSLY never had that error ever.
So, it either is a package that is already installed causing a conflict, or something with the depepens in the task-mate.
But something sure ain't right.
I am guessing, that since mate-media-gstreamer-1.6.1-2.1.mga4.i586 is not installed on my machine at this time, then there has to be a package that it does not like that is, and it just plain dies.

You do not have to repost the error messages again and again, or your guesses about mate-media-gstreamer, that doesn't help.
Please provide the output from the command that you run as user (read my previous post).

OK.
As to the queries you had me enter, those were done via a terminal as user.
ANY software I install the system asks for the root password before I can even try to install.
So therefore, software is installed only as root.
I may be "new" to linux, but ain't that new. I do understand how that works.
So, considering I am "trying" to install MATE and it is FAILING, there is a problem..somewhere.
So, no will not repost the error message again, BUT, I do believe it is what is important. Something is conflicting, and needs remedied.
And, like I said, I have been testing and trying different distros trying to find "just the right one for me".
Mageia 4 make something like distro numer 12 or 15, so yes I have been having lots of fun.
And, as stated by me earlier, this is the ONLY distro that blows up with that error. NONE of the others errored, they all accepted the install of MATE with no problems at all.
Same system, all start with the KDE desktop environment.
I just wish that there was a way to have system tell me what EXACTLY the mate install is whining about, as in what exactly is that package in conflict with. That would make my day go a whole lot better.

That's why I've asked for the urpmi --debug output which provides exactly that information. As long as you're guessing back and forth what the problem might be without providing the necessary information, can't help you further.

I've also shown previously that installation of task-mate works normally on other systems.

Um, damn.
OK dok, I concede (BIG TIME).
When I clicked on the console entry I had to create to run console as root, it gave up long lists and menu selections, and then yep, even asked to install, so I said YES.

QUESTION:
Why is this NOT the same as when the install remove programs asks for root password? Because as I stated in prior posts, all the other distros, once you say iinstall and put in root password, it installs. I never actually to go all out root to install before, in fact I had been informed not to do so. To always install as user and enter root password when needed.
