[SOLVED] inconsistent cursor theme for GTK apps

I've set system wide cursor to "Oxygen_white" (instead of wonderland) Yet Firefox and chrome show ugly black cursors (arrow and hand) i.e. hovering over a link turns the cursor to a black hand with pointing finger.
This is after upgrading to MGA4
How can I fix this?

EDIT:
It turns out the cursor theme is Adwaita which is the default for GTK apps...
Files to edit are
/etc/gtk-2.0/gtkrc
/etc/gtk-3.0/settings.ini
