[SOLVED] Mageia4 XFCE: NO! Suspend/Hibernate on Logout

PostPosted: Feb 17th, '14, 22:43
by RGRagosta
Just finished a new install of Maageia 4 (great work..!!) and typically do a clean mult-DM setup with: KDE, Gnome, and XFCE. I've used XFCE as my primary DM for many years under Mageia/Mandiva, with assorted items from Gnome/KDE apps. I make great use of the "Suspend" feature which avoids a full reboot seqiuence for me. On the last few releases of Mageia I can usually go weeks without a forced reboot (new kernel, libc, X11, updates..).

After activation, setup, and tweaking of my new XFCE DM I encountered NO "Suspend" or "Hibernate" buttons on logout. A few notes:

1. Have used a variety of XFCE DMs for years so am very familiar with this environment (and Mageia..)
2. Reviewed any/all existing: docs, Web, XFCE site, and Mageia Forums\/Bugzilla and nothing specfically mentioned this new "feature"..
3. Did encounter multiple error reports for the new Fedora 20 release which desicribe this issue exactly:
a. https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1012650
b. https://ask.fedoraproject.org/en/questi ... hibernate/
4. It appears there may be an issue in the xfce4-session-4.10 module..?

To overcome this issue I'm temporarily using the XFCE4 Power Manager which activates a notification icon in the taskbar Notification area. This includes direct options for Hibernate/Suspend. Of additional note, I utilize the Tango icon set and the icon for the XFCE Power Mgr. is missing as well (shows red 'x')...

Any insights/comments are welcomed... Thank you.

You could try with another DM to see if that fixes the issue.
Could be similar issue to https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Mageia_2_Err ... dm_or_slim

The underlying issue sems to be with xfce-session missing support for newer upower/logind: https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9952

Please file a bug so we can fix xfce4-session for mga4. I've added a patch from Fedora [1] to Cauldron which seems to fix this issue, at least it does for me.

Bug report #12811 filed: https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12811.

A few notes of thank you:

1. To docktor5000 for his speedy and succinct reply. I have tracked your innumerable Forum activities for years- and wish to take this opportunity to sincerely express my amazement at your Linux-Mageia depth & scope of knowledge. But more directly your astounding and consistent support of: Mageia, users, and this Forum.
2. To wally for your quick targeted solution and reply

Mageia (and Mandrake/Mandriva) has always been my "best" distro, with XFCE as my DM of choice. I appreciate your efforts/insights in this issue resolution. Thank you.

Thx for the pleasant feedback. Such small words like "thanks" helps us to continue our efforts. :)

I've explicitly disabled suspend/hibernate buttons in logout menu via hidden xfconf property, so I wasn't fully aware about this issue. Hopefully it gets fixed with new xfce4-session release.

You're welcome. :)

Doktor5000 thank you for your "personal Bugzilla" report on my regrettable error regarding your nick. True to your profile: pertinent remediation with insight and humor...

A couple of notes in return:

1. Mageia (and its earlier forms..) has been my primary distro of choice for +12 years. During those +12 years I've introduced dozens of friends, associates, and interested parties to its benefits and the "other side" of FOSS. Be assured I'll continue to do so happily and accept your comment wholeheartedly.
2. Shortly after your last response I committed to a very "tangible" Thank you to Association Mageia.Org, which has been long overdue. Your appropriate note provided the stimulus to do some overt good for an environment which provides great benefits..

Thank you again for your ever-present assistance and support.

Issue corrected in latest Mageia 4 pushed updates (21-Feb 2014) for the xfce-session component. :D

Many thanks to the Mageia 4 team for their very quick response, updates, and positive resolution. Simply, using Bugzilla as expected (and many time requested..) really does work (!!) and makes Mageia a better product...
