Need permissions

Postby jeffshepherd » Jul 1st, '11, 21:46

Hi everyone,

I want to create a new folder in a particular place but I cannot do so as I need permission to do so, ok I could create the folder somewhere else but I don't want to do that. How do I give myself permission to create the new folder in the place I want?

Thanks,
Jeff

Certain folders are reserved for system use. It is generally not a good idea to store personal files there. If you do want to then you need to be root. In a terminal/konsole, enter:
Code: Select all
su -

That's su followed by a space and a dash. You'll then be asked to enter the root password.

You can then launch a file manager (such as dolphin) as root by entering:
Code: Select all
dolphin

Be careful, you could make your system unusable by deleting or moving files as root.

Be aware that if you do create this folder you may find that depending on where you have put it you are unable later on to read the files you put in that folder. This is because the 'msec' Mageia Security System has very definite ideas about which users are allowed to read or write to files in system locations and will change the permissions on any files it considers insecure. To people used to working with Windows computers this can appear confusing. Generally the best thing to do is to put user data folders either under your home directory or /mnt which will not be checked by msec.

In the Security section of Mageia Control Centre you can tailor what permissions and ownership is permitted in any location, and you can disable msec altogether if you prefer.

BTW: An alternative way of starting a file manager as root if you are running KDE is to hit Alt+F2 and in the pop up box enter 'kdesu dolphin'

Maybe we could be more helpful if Jeff told us the reason for this folder, and in which particular place.
