That is the "libesound0" package you need there, and it doesn't (yet?) exist in Mageia repos.
I needed that too and I installed from somewhere else. (That doesn't mean you should do the same)
BTW, we don't have Synaptic either :D

If libesound is about ESD, or in long form enlightenment sound daemon, then you don't really need it,
as Pulseaudio is a complete replacement for old ESD ;)
If it's the only dependency missing, then you can install with rpm -Uhv --nodeps.

More information at:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PulseAudio
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PulseAudio wrote:PulseAudio also provides its own native interface to applications that want to support PulseAudio directly, as well as a legacy interface for ESD applications, making it suitable as a drop-in replacement for ESD

This means that those esound libraries will be dropped/not packaged?
Some (old) applications still need them though...

It seems that esound has been removed from the repo:

Applications available in Mageia repos?
Those (supposedly proprietary or ancient) applications should be updated then, or at least their Requires-tags should be corrected.
Code: Select all
$ rpm -q --provides pulseaudio-esound-compat
esound
pulseaudio-esound-compat = 0.9.22-5.mga1
pulseaudio-esound-compat(x86-64) = 0.9.22-5.mga1

No no, I was talking about old indeed apps and from outside the repo, some from source.
Isolated cases.

So maybe you should propose that a fake libesound0-Provides tag could be added to pulseaudio-esound-compat or libpulseaudio directly as a workaround?
Maybe ask Colin Guthrie about this one and give some examples of apps that are widely used that need this?

Yeah, like Colin is going to listen to me :D
Besides, other than Picasa above I don't know right now other "widely" used apps that need that.
I personally needed libesound0 to install the old Amarok 1.4 on Mageia. And this one doesn't quite fit in the widely used and supported applications category :D

Anyway, they both run fine without libesound0, which is needed only at install time.

Picasa has better integration with my webalbums than the native apps
I certainly haven't found any other apps that will allow you to scan through all your picture folders as easily

all the google stuff is fairly popular & it would be nice if it were supported directly in the repositories
I understand there arguments against the non open offerings from the G people & the devs may not want to
fair enough

the older 2.7 version of picasa does work as does google earth

What do you mean exactly by that? As far as i had contact with him, he was always open to suggestions and really friendly.

BTW: About Amarok 1.4, do you have any small howto on that or packages, because i know someone
who also would like to see this, as for him clementine doesn't offer all needed features and it can't import
existing Amarok collection & ratings. But maybe in a new thread.

OT: Yes, it's the parser of the forum software. But i can't edit it anymore, a moderator must do that.
The time-to-edit has been set to 6 hours, AFAIK.

OT:
Given the fact that 2 'requests to edit', reported to the moderators by a user of this forum 3 days ago have not yet been taken care of, you may learn that having such things corrected is a lottery. Of course, the 2 active moderators may have a life as well.

My understanding of what rda wrote:

https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1956#c7

is that Mageia is attempting to combine a social networking site with a help and support site in a single forum, with the social networking aspect given priority. Hence rules (which may be appropriate in a social networking site) are being applied to the help and support sub-forums, where they may not be appropriate. Most linux distro's operate their forums as principally help and support sites, with the chit-chat regarded as being of lesser importance.

It will be interesting to see how successful Mageia's approach turns out to be.

the combo format just respects the reality of the real world
things will get chatty from time to time
I would favor a no edit format
which makes everyone think twice about what they may post & live with it
seeing the give & take of collaborative problem solving is in & of itself educational
when it comes to solving technical issues
the local search function is rarely of much use
a more global approach being more effective
a bigger better goal is finding ways to expedite/automate the documentation process. so the help files are actually helpful

Like Doktor5000 said above:
If it's the only dependency missing, then you can install with rpm -Uhv --nodeps

However Picasa still needs a bunch of other packages apart from libesound0, at least these ones:
- dma-0.2-2.mga1.i586
- ed-1.5-1.mga1.i586
- libglibc_lsb-2.4.7-7.mga1.i586
- libjpeg62-6b-49.mga1.i586
- lsb-core-lib-4.1-7.mga1.i586
- lsb-core-noarch-4.1-7.mga1.i586
- lsb-lib-4.1-7.mga1.i586
- lsb-noarch-4.1-7.mga1.i586
- pax-3.4-8.mga1.i586
- perl-Pod-Perldoc-3.150.0-2.mga1.noarch
- perl-Safe-2.290.0-3.mga1.i586

So install these first from Rpmdrake, then download Picasa somewhere on your hard-drive and in the same folder with the Picasa rpm use the console (F4) to execute the command.
Code: Select all
rpm -Uhv --nodeps picasa-3.0-current.i386.rpm

Heck yeah, it would've been much simpler if we just had libesound in the repo but hey, "Death to esound!!!" :?

How do I connect to other sources of software with RPM?
say I was doing a development package [daily build] of some app
I'm probably dense, I'm not following what I need to do to add the missing package for picasa :D
