What version of VLC are you using? . I now have Mageia 4 and installed the VLC 2.1.2 Rincewind version via the software management program,as before it only shows podcasts in the lower left panel under internet . I will have to ask on the forums as the windows version does come with the icecast option under the internet Tab .

This is an area that mageia and linux in general really needs to get sorted . For example take a look at the pre-installed Rhythmbox player . Click on the radio tab and I get a list of only 22 internet stations (in comparison to the hundreds on windows ) why? I thought ice box was open source . :-( . Games and Audio is where linux sucks in comparison .

I have an icecast entry under Internet and when I click on it I get a lengthy list of radio stations. Perhaps you are missing a necessary plugin. I have the following packages installed:
Code: Select all
$ rpm -qa | grep vlc
lib64vlccore5-2.0.8-2.mga3.tainted
vlc-plugin-theora-2.1.2-1.mga4.tainted
vlc-plugin-lua-2.1.2-1.mga4.tainted
lib64vlccore7-2.1.2-1.mga4.tainted
vlc-plugin-common-2.1.2-1.mga4.tainted
vlc-plugin-pulse-2.1.2-1.mga4.tainted
phonon-vlc-0.6.2-2.mga4
lib64vlc5-2.1.2-1.mga4.tainted
vlc-2.1.2-1.mga4.tainted

I don't normally listen to music, and so this is all that I can do to help.

Sorry but that's not quite true, and that's not with Mageia to get this sorted. Complain to rhythmbox developers why they deliver different lists to linux and windows users.
IMHO linux is getting much better at gaming, now that Steam is available and most games just run without issues under wine. And thanks to Humble Bundle a lot of developers offer native linux builds for their games.

Also there's a mass of professional audio editors, plugins and stuff, everything open source and free of charge. Not necessarily the case for windows.

You should get your facts straight.

Also why do you think that Rhythmbox uses Icebox for radio streaming, and not just lists some free internet radio stations? Also there's not only Icebox but also Shoutcast. Simply use another media player, as Rhythmbox seems quite dull and broken (tools menu contains nothing, no useful plugins)

It seems I need to get the tainted plugins

Code: Select all
lib64vlc5-2.1.2-1.mga4
lib64vlccore7-2.1.2-1.mga4
vlc-2.1.2-1.mga4
vlc-plugin-bonjour-2.1.2-1.mga4
vlc-plugin-common-2.1.2-1.mga4
vlc-plugin-flac-2.1.2-1.mga4
vlc-plugin-pulse-2.1.2-1.mga4
vlc-plugin-shout-2.1.2-1.mga4
vlc-plugin-theora-2.1.2-1.mga4

Granted there are signs of improvement of games in linux, with steam, and that's essentially because steam are seeing linux as a possible market place . As for music, when bitwig sudio http://www.bitwig.com/en/bitwig-studio gets released there will be a Diverse Digital Audio Workstation that can compare to the many windows DAW's . It is a fact that the many free linux DAW's are not attracting many music producers , and from the many linux DAW's I've tested this is because they are rather under-developed.And many of them stay that way! .

Quite often the facts speak for them self!. More people are using linux now because the fact is there are many Distributions that are of at least equal quality to windows or macs . The majority of people whom play games and produce music either stick to windows or boot back into windows because linux has a long way to go in attracting these users with equally good software .

What I do find wierd is the response I read from people whenever this fact is mentioned .Rather like your defence "get you facts straight" reply . I'd say the facts say that linux is catching up but their is still a long way to go especially in music production.

Ultimately I use Mageia because it's what I like to think is free ,as in speech .And the best things in life are free (at there pure source).

As a rather weak comparison ;) It's rather like the majority of the people whom live in citys and have become disconnected from the natural worlds ecological systems(in recent survey in a city in the USA many could not even identitify a BEE!),they live in a social bubble of illusion!,where too many trivial matters dominate their lives, and many have learnt to value their city more than the biological service provided by nature that enabels them to have a city . It's scientific evidence based thinking that we are in the process of destroying these biological services at an increasing rate ( we are currently in a mass extinction event!) .But such is the blind faith and complacency ( because nature has seemingly always provided) of many people ,even as the events of ecological catastrophe begin to unfold around the planet (as science has forecast ,(unless we stop producing CO2 and destroying nature (biodiversity ) ,the majority seem to be stuck in the carry on as usual mentality or just blame politicians, politicians whom thhey voted in, probably because they promised them more stuff to throw away.

What are you computer users going to do when your servers can not be maintained any more, when the electricity grids begin to fail because of storms ?. IF, the trend of climate change continues at it's current rate, how long will it be before basic natural services, we in the "developed" nations have learnt to take for granted, become severly disrupted .

It's a lot sooner then you probably dare to think !. Though of course because of the random variable within our planets ecological systems, only a eductaed best guess can be hypothesised .

Now this is very difficult to get your "facts straight " on , but it is my judgement on the evidence (of increasing climate change) that I have seen that we are increasinly approaching a point of no return .As human production of CO2 continues to increase (as it is doing) thus the amount of energy in the system will increase . This increase in energy will have a expotential effect on our climate thus severe weather events will continue to become more severe . Are these severe weather events introducing more carbon dioxide (or other green house gasers ) into the atmosphere is the question . It's a possibilty the earth will have a anthropogenic (human caused) runaway greenhouse effect.
It's possible it won't .

If you think that this is off topic then it is you that is not getting your facts straight .

Climate change maybe our final hour. (Though relatively speaking we are only in our first few minutes on this planet) .

Evidence of future events is incredibly difficult . So in the light of how the Global weather is changing at a unprecedented rate, just as scientists have forecast ,should'nt we start listenning to their advice on the actions we must do now .

Ok just kidding :D It's probably too late anyway ! Carry on as usual,as the habitual animals you so obviously are .

After all the facts do suggest we are a very destrructive species ! .

After adding tainted media sources (magiea control centre) ,then removing vlc and all it's plugins , then installing the tainted package of vlc plus plugins as listed above, I now have a listing for icecast radio internet :-) .

The tainted media sources is not part of the default installation .I.E - the default installation of VLC has no ice cast !.

Thanks for the help on solving this .
