4GB ram
windows 8.1 pro 64 bit

I want to load mageia 3 alongside windows 8 to enable dual boot, there are many posts about this so obviously not straight fwd.

I have created a live usb mageia kde in EFI mode using rufus with gpt partitioning, no errors or problems encountered.

I shrank the windows hdd to leave an un allocate space on the disc (not sure if this necessary or not)

Disabled secure boot in bios but left in UEFI mode.

Booted from usb and the attached resulted

Would appreciate any help

while ive not done this myself, as i have no use for MS windows 8

I just do not understand why there is such an issue here, given that UEFI AND GPT have been around for years, windows 8 has been around long enough. UEFI/GPT seesm to be the agreed standard going forward, so I find it amazing that it is so difficult to get Linux to dual boot, why has it not been properly addressed.

If the idea is to get more people to use linux, then it is essential that the switch from windows to linux is as easy and painless as possible, it is not realistic to expect new users to dump windows one day and be fully competent with linux the next, there is a long learning curve, hence the need for painless dual boot.

If linux is only meant for those with degrees in computer science, then it should not be seen as a replacement for windows for us mere mortals.

If anyone can tell be in simple terms how to dual , or even boot from live USB in EFI mode (which as I posted, I cannot even accomplish), I would be grateful.

However no one has responded to the data in the attachment, is this then not important.

You probably should rewrite that install media, after checking the md5sum of your download.

I am sorry but as I said i cannot even boot from the live USB never mind the rest of it (step 1and 2)

Anyway forget dual boot for the time being, can anyone tell me how to boot from live usb in EFI mode , bearing in mind the info provided in my first post.

Note your last reply, I will prepare another USB using the the same settings in rufus

I have tried many combinations of distro and burning/writing methods, but with the same result I cannot get any live usb to boot in UEFI mode with a pre installed windows 8 system.

Can anybody give me straight fwd howto, I have read the links provided, but they do not address the basic problem, ie booting from live usb in UEFI mode

im going out on a limb here and expressing my own opinion, and not that of any linux distribution.

the requirement for eufi was forsed on manufacturers who wanted to sell pcs that to do it, they had to support eufi
as part of the prior plan to disable peoples choice and buy pcs for linux by microsoft.

the prior idea that was closed off but almost surfaced again this time was to use the trusted computing model to block any non windows os from loading.

ms knows that its only time now between thier failures and linux slow but steady move forwards before a wave
happens, sure its been talked about for years, but every year it becomes more of a posibility.

in fact with androidvits close to a reality, and how long before people realise the link between the two.

i personaly see and have no need to dual boot, mageia does it all for me

theres no real driver in linux world to adopt this that is for windows, especialy when the backwards compat mode works as it does on my eufi laptop, the asus ux31a

Thanks Peter, for your comments, , the more I search for a solution, the more i agree with you, it seems Microsoft are using thier power to influence manufacturers, hence why sell 'windows 8 only lap tops', my particular laptop, is not even officially supported with windows 7 drivers (the manucaturer Acer told me directly), they limit the bios options by 'hiding' advanced options' such as virtual machine.
If I could dump windows today I would, but I am relatively new to linux and not sufficiently confident yet to do so, and there are thousands like me in the same dilemma.

Anyway I will persevere, I never liked being told by other people what i should do, i prefer to make my own choice, as do most people, and I believe Microsoft have made a huge mistake with windows 8 and their arrogant philosophy of trying forcing the world to use their systems. I wonder if some of the large businesses and corporations who use windows are aware that with one push of a button their entire management systems, files and records could be destroyed, maybe a bit far fetched, but it entirely possible.

Anyway i think this is a great opertunity, because of the backlash of windows 8 for all the development gurus in Linux to really push for a system/ method that can easily and smoothly run alongside windows on a single harddrive in using EFI, because it is not going away.
