[DONE] Installation of Mageia 3

Postby andrew-lohmann » Jan 14th, '14, 13:00

I have reinstalled Mageia 3, 64 bit in order to switch Desktop from Gnome to KDE. Some issues arose;

I selected Install (but not update),
Use existing partitions,
And don't format any partitons.
The installation attempts to find what is installed but usually does not progress even when left for more than 2 hours So I turned the computer off and on. On one previous occasion it did proceed and after 15 minutes and I was able to continue installation.

I selected; Custom; KDE, Gnome and LXDE.
The installation proceeds to update packages with dialogue box periodically asking for my consent.
But it apears to have completed ask that I remove installaion media and restart the computer But I did not do that straight way (I was doing something else) as I had done before and another request poped up which I consented to.
Significantly I think that extra installations have resulted in a slightly better performing Linux installation.
Speciffically I found that previously when I switched to LXDE and I accepted an update then Gnome was removed but this has not occured on this occasion.

PC I use as a desktop at home;
IBM xSeries 206m - Server with IDE (Linux) drive and SATA (Windows) drive, 64 Bit processor and 1GB of DRAM.
There is a BIOS warning at start up associated with the PCI soundcard.
Linux; Mageia 4 & Windows XP

You can simply install task-kde, logout and login to KDE. Mission accomplished, no need to reinstall.

What update did you accept? Normally updates don't remove stuff. Maybe you went after the informational message about orphaned packages and removed them manually afterwards? See https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Removing_packages

Also in general, when you reinstall but do not format the / partition this is quite messy.

Thanks for the tip on adding task-KDE

Sorry I don't have the a record of what happend on that previous occasion that lead to Gnome being removed but it was a notification which I accepted. I think the clue is that on this occasion the I did not imediately restart the computer when the restart point was reached and some more updates were offered.

On this last occasion I did format the / partition.

Sorry for not being precise but then that is how fault finding is after you discover the problem you can go back and see what the relivant clues were.
