something wierd going on

rebooted and taskbar colour changed.

switched to another taskbar theme, oxywin-nopattern

in case thats it, also to note that theme is actualy a perfect complement to the unchangable start-menu

at least when using classic task bar

and not as extreame white as the default

ill see if problem re-occures after this change.

EDIT

still does it, completly blocks start bar until i minimise, then restore apps

Can see something similar at work, mostly related to I/O intensive tasks, where complete control panel (including start menu and window list) is unresponsive - although e.g. switching via Alt+Tab still works without issues, so seems like a plasma issue.

OK update

updated my Ux31a to mga3 64 bit kde today

its doing this also

but heres the thing, check if its same for you

only happens when the system has been left idle for a while, almost as though something new in this kernel

or software version is doing better power managment as somethings gone to sleep.

I remember nehalem processors had this problem with redhat 5, would not come out of sleep state for a while.

Now im not using nehalem, laptop is ivybridge and desktop is phenom II

both have SSD, so its not a drive taking time to spin up.

but its something like that

Hmmm, not really, at work it's usually during work, often when heavy IO happens, but also sometimes I don't see much IO.
Also with an SSD and no power management, so processor is always kept busy :)
Ahh, and at work it's with RHEL 6.4 and KDE 4.11, core i5 and nvidia.

At home with Mageia no such issues at all, even when I've currently got all the fancy stuff still enabled (Akonadi, Nepomuk, Strigi, you name it)
even when I'm totally not using it wanted to see how it impacts normal use of system.

I have lately been noticing this kind of effect also, but for me it only occurs when I have focus in a virtual machine and usually only when I'm doing heavy disk I/O.

The effect is that the entire interface locks for at least several seconds. During that period of time, I am unable to exit the virtual machine back to the host although ctrl-alt-Fn works and I can get to a console.

Given that I am working with a Windows program install right now, I am doing lots of snapshots and reversions from snapshots in my Windows 7 VM, which involves a LOT of disk I/O. I had been attributing the lockups to an artifact in the latest version of VMware 9, but if others are having the problem too maybe it is something else. I have noticed this effect most prominently in a Win7 VM, but I also notice it at intermittent intervals (accompanied by disk noises) in my Win2K virtual machines (presently I have two of them running), and in my OpenSUSE 11.2 VMs (two running), and in my OpenSUSE 13.1 VM (one running).

When I do not have focus in a VM, I do not have this problem.

This, BTW, is Mageia3 64 bit on a quad-core overclocked Phenom-II 955 processor, 32 GB RAM, with 5 320 Gb/sec 15K RPM SCSI drives on an Adaptec 79320 controller and one SATA drive.

not seen this on redhat 6.4 or 6.5 which I also use at work.

I have a desktop at home with it also , yet again not same.

this is definitely a mageia 3 thing, as both these systems were running mga2 before and did not ever experience this.

And i dont think its anything to do with IO, been running iotop on this all day, looking to see if its related.

been copying huge video files about over NFS and samba, and never had an issue.

its simply when i leave it, say go in from my workshop to house to have some lunch.

when i come back, task bar is unresponsive for about 10 seconds, while i keep flicking between windows.

then suddenly start menu pops up (a windows term, i know, sure you know what i mean)

oh and off topic I know, but the dam bluetooth mouse going to sleep and needing to be reconnected every time is still in mga3 (i did report a bug, ill update it).

I have solved this problem for myself, by ditching major parts of KDE by using
razorqt.

ive commented on this before , but held back using until mga3 was suitably mature.

Now with moving to MGA3 i canot abid this intermitent freeze of the taskbar/menu

razorqt , with a little effort (realy not that much) is a suitable replacment for the plasma launcher/task

and still uses kwin, and therefore still provides KDE, without the sluggish performance

or anoying unnessasary glitter.
