First time user with some questions

Postby nomko » Jan 9th, '14, 14:03

Hi everybody,

Just installed Mageia 3 with the KDE desktop. Although i'm a first time Mageia user, i'm using Linux since 2007 (Ubuntu 7.04/Linux Mint). During installation I could choose which desktop environment I wanted: KDE, Gnome, Lxde. But there was also an option for another desktop environment. But choosing that option doesn't show any other desktop environment.

My question is: What other DE is there to get installed? I really like the Cinnamon DE although Razor-QT looks very promising as well...

Any help will be very much appreciated!
Thanks!

mageia also has
enlightenment
FVWM
icewm
Windowmaker
XFCE
and some "other" more obscure window managers.

the point of picking the headlined packages is that it kicks of task-xyz where xyz is a full suit of rpm's to pull in all the say kde components.

choosing other allows you to be more specific in picking the specific packages you want, via the customise packages.

however i would suggest that as a new mageia user, just pick kde

then use the software installer to add what you want

and at the login manager choose which env you want to try out.

as you may find that choosing a much simpler window manager makes life hard from that point on.

Cinnamon and also MATE will only be available in the normal repositories starting with Mageia 4, although MATE is unofficially available also for Mageia 3: viewtopic.php?f=10&t=4867

For the desktop selection, it should look like this: http://doc.mageia.org/installer/3/en/co ... sktop.html and when choosing custom you should get this: http://doc.mageia.org/installer/3/en/co ... roups.html
But depending on which installation media you used, there will only be a subset of the desktops that are available from the repositories,
as there is only limited space on the installation media.

So, there won't be any problems switching from KDE to Razor-QT and then remove KDE to keep Razor-QT as my main DE?

Well, if not for scarce disk space, there's probably no use to remove KDE - but generally speaking, no.
But better first test razor-qt thoroughly before removing anything, as you don't want to end up with no desktop :)

I think this is the best way for testing Razor-QT! Thanks for this advise!
