[SOLVED] GeForce GTX560TI Driver Installation

Hello,

I installed Mageia yesterday and am very impressed with the quality of the distro. It shows alot of hard work has gone into this. Until about 6 months ago I was primarily a Windows user so I am still getting to grips with Linux.

Can you please assist me with stopping the x server in Mageia, so I can install my Nvidia driver? I am running KDE4.10.

I have tried the following (from google):
Code: Select all
/etc/init.d/kdm stop

Thank you in advance.

Edited: It looks like I currently have this package installed by default: "x11-driver-video-nvidia-current - NVIDIA proprietary X.org driver and libraries for GeForce 8xxx and later cards" as this suggests this is for GeForce 8xxx and later, which mine isn't. I am still experiencing some performance issues in games.

Please have a look at https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Setup_the_graphical_server and try that way first.

If you want to use the nvidia driver directly from nvidia, either use http://onse.fi/nvidia-mgabuild/ to transform it into convenient
Mageia packages or switch to runlevel 3 via
Code: Select all
init 3

Hi Doktor5000,

Thank you, that has worked a treat! No more performance issues when running games. I am shocked at how easy Mageia makes linux.

I followed the steps located on the wiki which informed me that there is an updated proprietary driver available. It was a nice an quick update.
