lost icons; background picture.

I added a bunch of menu items to the desktop. Then i right-clicked on the desktop and attempted to change the background image, unsuccessfully--I tried to install an image not on
the list, one which I use on all my other Linux installations. At any rate, when I got out of that, all the icons I had put on the screen were gone, and I couldn't get them back.
I wound up redoing the screen, but now all the icons I put back say program.desktop, where program is the name, like firefox, or K3b, etc.

So, I'd kinda like to get my original screen back, and I'd kinda like to change the Christmas-tree ball image to the image I have been usually using. (I have imported the image, and
it is in my /home/doug/Pictures directory.)

New to Mageia, but not to Linux.

thanx--doug

Did you maybe change the desktop layout, away from folder view to, say standard desktop?
In the dialog where you change the background picture, the topmost dropdown menu says "Layout". What's currently selected there?
Should be Folder view.
