USB multiboot

Postby mark9117 » Oct 22nd, '13, 09:47

This may be the wrong place for my question but I have no objection to a moderator moving it.

Does anybody have any experience with multi-booting usb sticks? I'm interested in putting together a single usb drive that will boot several utilities (backtrack, ultimate boot disk, etc.) I've looked around and while it seems possible, the multiboot usb drive may not be ready for prime time.

Am I wrong? Can you point me in the right direction?

Thanks.

Everything that's related to support or asking technical questions, that's not covered by one of the more special subforums like translation or packaging should always go to Basic Support.

Someone posted this recently here or on the mailing list, not sure.
Check http://www.rmprepusb.com/ and Easy2Boot, the youtube videos have a ton of examples and proof that it's working perfectly.

For even more, check https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Installation ... erified.29 or https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Installation ... working.29

Thanks for the info dok. I have been looking at the stuff at rmprepusb but it all seems geared toward windows users.

I stumbled onto Multibootusb last night and downloaded multibootusb-6.4-1mga.noarch.rpm, but it fails to install - claims "mount" is not installed. Of course mount is installed and I can't find any resolution for that on the Interwebs. I'm wondering if I could do it manually somehow.

The research continues.

Install via rpm -Uvh --nodeps or urpmi --allow-force --allow-nodeps as there's no package that's either called or provides "mount"
Code: Select all
[doktor5000@localhost ~]$ urpmf --provides mount | grep mount$
[doktor5000@localhost ~]$

Tried the urpmi --allow-force option last night and it installed but it wouldn't open.

Tried again just now:

Code: Select all
]# urpmi --allow-force --allow-nodeps multibootusb-6.4-1mga.noarch.rpm

Still insists mount is not installed.

Still won't run:

Code: Select all
# multibootusb

Multibootusb looks really promising and I was happy to see them offer a Mageia package (dated about March of this year) but it has this annoying flaw in that it won't work.

Thanks for the info. Moving on.

You could disable the script via --noscripts or just extract the contents via rpm2cpio, or more easier, using mc to copy the files out of the rpm package.

I didn't know Midnight Commander could do that.

Seems like a lot of effort for stuff I can gain more easily with something like install-depot-multisystem.sh. I'll look at it tonight when I have time.

Thanks again.
