CCM & Users gone awol Mag 3

After an update, the boot stuck with "Reached target Graphical Interface" error message. Using a live cd, I managed to change the default.target symlink in systemd/system to runlevel3 and in safe mode, used drakx11 to choose the vesa driver for an easy restart. Now It boots to a prompt but will not recognise any user login other than root. The GUI wiil start and shows an absence of nearly all desktop icons (normal, not kde?), but there is no CCM and I know no way to get to it. I've changed the graphics card back to the NVidia 8100 --> as it's an 8600gt, but no change, no users, no graphical CCM.
