[SOLVED] Install to usb drive failure

I used two different pen drives and ImageWriter and Rufus to try to install Mageia live cd.

Total of 4 attempts.

Failures all around.

What failures did you receive exactly? Where the pen drives bootable at all?
Did you compare your downloaded image with the md5sum on the download page?

Is there a way to direct the error to a log file or is there an error log created?

(I have a Windows program that can show all partition types and I can view files in Linux partitions.)

If not, I will write down the error messages.

I recall my DataStick getting to the menu and I selected Loading up Mageia when the error message occurred.

I already have OpenSuse installed on my hard drive, so I want to be careful before installing a 3rd operating system.

If possible, I would like to resolve the modem issue from a USB install before doing a hard drive installation.

Well, you didn't provide any details nor context what errors you received, and when.
Did you get an error when writing the image via Rufus/Imagewriter to the pen drive, or did that succeed and you received errors
when trying to boot Mageia from the pen drive afterwards?

Please be more precise, but also keep it clear so it's understandable.

It installed to pen drive.

On bootup from the pen drive these are some of the messages.

Mount wrong fs type

failed to setup loop device

Can't mount root filesystem

Dropping to debug shell.

I've seen that before.
What's happening is that with the correct tools when writing to a USB drive the hybrid ISO creates a "Hidden HPFS/NTFS" partition that masquerades as an optical drive.
Written with the wrong or old tools that know not the hybrid system it looks for an optical drive that isn't there.

I have several "Linux pen drive installers" in addition to Rufus that run from windows.

I will try out other installers and maybe I will get lucky.

Puppy Linux has been the only distro that installed to a pen drive on my first try.
Because everything is in ram, it is smokin' fast.

I was perplexed that many Linux versions will only install their brand to a pen drive.

OpenSuse does not offer any native program to install an o.s. to a pen drive. Instead you have to install Image Writer.

If I can get Mageia to work successfully with all my hardware, then it will be my second O.S. on my dual boot system.

And I will promote it to those open to try out a better O.S.

I've also tried Rufus today, and when it worked last time without issues, as far as my memory serves, this time a small issue showed up. Image was written fine, and on next boot from the created pen drive, after loading the kernel, where you normally only see a (ncurses) text menu showing "loading program into memory", before the actual installer runs an error dialog showed up and told me that the installer cannot find the disk.

As i'd seen that before, just pressed Cancel, then cancel to select any other driver, and select Harddrive, and your USB drive should show up,
select it and installation will continue.

When testing with version 0.9 of Win32 Disk Imager, everything went fine, and it even offers the option to
check the md5sum of the image that you want to write to the pendrive.

I would like some help in getting my USB modem setup for faxing and dialing out to another modem via a phone line.

It is a Trendnet TFM-561-U modem. Both Linux and Windows capable.
