Display problems

Postby z » Sep 22nd, '13, 06:34

I recently performed a clean install of Mageia 3 to see if I could eliminate some issues with a freezing desktop. Well, now I can't seem to recall how I managed to get my multiple monitors setup last time. Currently, under display and monitor settings (KDE), I have no options for multiple monitors, even if I plug in a second monitor. Also, I can manage to extend the desktop to a second monitor, but it stretches me entire desktop instead of just leaving my taskbar on the main monitor and extending a second desktop from there. I don't know if I explained that clearly. I used to be able to have the taskbar on one monitor only, now it always stretches across both. Also, if I move my cursor off the right side of the desktop, it will disappear and not reappear again until I have moved it at least half way across the screen to the left, then it will re-appear somewhere in the middle of the desktop. Very strange. It's also interesting that I can move it off the dekstop at all, even when there is no additional monitor connected (and the external monitor is disabled in the display and monitor dettings). I'm using a Dell XPS L502X with an Nvidia hybrid graphics chip. I have the drivers installed for both the intel and Nvidia chips. Oh, one more thing, if I click on "Gamma" on the display and monitor settings, I get logged out, every time. Thanks.

Please show the content of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Also please show the output of
Code: Select all
grep -i driver /var/log/Xorg.0.log
Cauldron is not for the faint of heart!
Caution: Hot, bubbling magic inside. May explode or cook your kittens!

[Solved]Re: Display problems

I played around with some other distributions before I had a chance to post a copy of the xorg.conf file. Although, I did look at it at one point and it seemed ok, but maybe I missed something. I have come to the conclusion that it is vgaswitcheroo that is causing the problems (or at least, most of them). I was turning off my discrete video card with it and that is when I noticed most of the freezing problems (although not always). I used a couple other distributions and also turned off the card via vgaswitcheroo, same problems. So, I really need bumblebee in order for my laptop to be functional. At least, that's what seems to be the case. I tried a couple of distros which have bumblebee in their repos and everything seems to work fine. So, for the time being, I'm afraid I'm going to have to use a different distro.

Bumblebee is available from the russian MRC community: http://translate.google.com/translate?h ... inux.ru%2F
There's also a wiki page for it: https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Bumblebee
