More on trying out KDE. In GNOME Classic I can create icons on the panel to run
home-made and system applications. It is a very simple process involving the right-click
panel menu or drag and drop from the system menus or the desktop. Any chance this can be
done in KDE?

When the application is running, right-click on its icon in the panel and select "Show a launcher when not running".

Well, after unlocking plasmoids you can also do the same from start menu.
Right-click a menu entry and either -> add to workspace or -> add to control panel. You can also drag&drop those on the panel in the launcher area.

The previous tip about adding launchers to the panel certainly works but any local applications are represented by exactly the same icon, an X over an orange ring. I may need two dozen or more of these and have to scan the whole panel to check the labels. The configuration options do not allow for selecting a unique icon. There is at least one other problem; if an application runs without window decorations then it does not even appear on the panel while running, so no possibility of a launcher.

I have to hope that GNOME Classic will continue to be supported for the foreseeable... GNOME 3 is unusable as well, from my simple point of view.

What do you mean by local applications? Why can't you add an icon?

Local applications are my own programs. I run dozens of them, some of them fairly trivial. An icon appears on the panel using the aforesaid method but I have been unable to find any way of changing the icon image to one of mine. Two dozen identical icons are not a lot of use. No doubt there is a solution buried somewhere in the complexities of KDE.

Best way to do this is open menu editor via right click on start menu -> menu editor.
Create a new element, enter name, description, command to run and select the icon, then save the menu.
Open the menu, right-click -> add to panel.

Because the way you did it previously will reuse the main window icon, where a generic one is being used if not defined properly by the program author.

Really solved this time.

am quite unfamiliar to linux, so I have installed Mageia 3 KDE as most
user friendly OS. Everything works even better than I expected. I would
like to set desktop launchers (trough desktop-right click-standard menu-ad
new) for Screen Locker Settings and Configure Energy Saving. I have found
many articles about disabling screen locker and adding various desktop
"shortcuts" but couldn't find nothing of my topic. At the best it was
something similar but couldn't understand or was afraid to combine. I have
found widget for screen saver turn on/off but id didn't work properly.
Please be kind and give me step by step instructions especially about
finding work path or uri. Maybe i would have some other needs in the
future.
