How to disable kernel updates?

Postby M_R » Aug 16th, '13, 18:57

Hi everybody. I hate kernel updates because they either break my system somehow or have me go throught the annoying process of reinstalling virtualbox drivers. My system is ok as it is with the current kernel so I would like the auto-update system to care only about software updates, not new kernels. How do I do this?

Hi M_R

You can add the kernel packages to the skip list, as explained here:
https://forums.mageia.org/en/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=5032

I'm not sure it is wise to do that, though, because that way you'll miss security updates, too.

Kind regards,

Excellent, thank you very much.

Do you mean that having the kernel disabled will also disable other security updates? Or do you mean to say that the kernel updates themselves are security updates?

Kernel updates on the stable releases almost always include security updates. There has only been one kernel update for Mageia 3 and it certainly did:

Disabling kernel updates will not disable security updates for other packages.

Instead of disabling kernel updates you could allow the kernel to update but set up grub to always boot your favourite kernel.
In Mageia Control Centre>Boot>SetUpBoot modify the entry you want to be the default.

All your virtual box kernel modules etc will carry on working.
