Hi
do you have a Nvidia or AMD graphics device?
If so you may have to [re]install drivers for the later updates.
cheers

From the version you mentioned, looks like a kernel update. Please post the out put of
- Code: Select all
rpm -qa --last | head -25

You can try with kernel boot option xdriver=intel or use vesa driver temporarily as described in
https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Mageia_2_Err ... rd_driversBut i'd suggest opening up a bugreport, after searching if it hasn't been reported yet already:

So did you create a bugreport for the kernel update?

I don't have technical know-how to file a bug report.

I have a similar problem: I only can boot with kernel 3.18.3, but not with 3.18.3.4; it stalls at the splash boot image with no bubbles. I can boot with the latest only if I disable ACPI from the GRUB2 menu, but then the X don't start because de NVIDIA driver fails to load. If there's any further information I could provide please let me know. I've seen some other complaints on this regard in this forum, as in
viewtopic.php?f=7&t=5568.

Obvious choice here is to disable boot splash so you can see the console messages on the screen and learn where it is hanging.
FWIW, I am booting 3.8.13.4-desktop-1.mga3 on a Phenom-II with Nvidia graphics driver 319.17 downloaded and installed from the Nvidia website, and using legacy grub (not grub2). No problems.

As mentioned elsewhere I have the very same problem with a Thinkpad W520 machine. Yesterday, I decided to try to remove the latest kernel in order to be able to use VirtualBox (The last update (vb kernel) broke virtualbox as I still boot the old kernel). Just to be safe, I decided to clone my disk before any modification and downloaded the latest clonezilla distribution. The CD booted fine the first time and after I was unable to reboot it for a while (Infact until I added ACPI=NO to the boot options but I'm not sure it was a valid stanza). The whole thing freezing apparently at various stages but while waiting for /dev to be populated.
I cannot do the same with mageia because as soon as the splash screen is displayed, the system freezes and the esc key does nothing : the only way to get out is to hold down the power button until the power is switched off.
The hardware uses an NVidia card with the optimus thing disabled by bios : the system always uses the NVidia device instead of the intel one on the main board. This was not tolerated by windows 8 (that I removed to switch back to Win 7 for usability reasons).
Just let me know if I can be of some help in this area. I don't have access to to thinkpad at work but can do things when at home.

Sounds like our problems are extremely similar (in that I am also stuck without the ability to use virtualbox). I tried the various boot option suggested in the addenda, but specifying xdriver=intel or xdriver=nvidia gets to the screen with one bubble above the cauldron, then sits for a while before dumping me into a non-responsive debug shell. xdriver=nouveau just goes to the black screen.
My laptop is the Dell XPS 15z, with i7 processor and dual (intel + nvidia) graphics. For everything other than virtualbox, I have been able to get by with booting to the older kernel.

It's curious I also have a very similar laptop as allezstade: Thinkpad W530, and as he reports with Clonezilla, it happens the same to me as well trying to boot the latest GParted.
On the other hand, I followed the advise of jiml8 and disabled boot splash. The latest thing I see is "ACPI: Lid Switch [LID]". I tried blacklisting the button module of ACPI and I see two lesser lines, ending in "dracut: Starting plymouth daemon".

can you boot in safe mode
safemode uses text only so it may be easier to see the point at which it develops a problem.

I've tried safe mode already and ir has exactly the same problem. I didn't thought however to get rid of the splash screen. I'll change the parameters of my grub as soon as I can and try to see where the system freezes.
Thanks for suggestion.

More Info :
I finally got rid of the splash screen. When booting the 'uptodate' kernel. the system freezes after having displayed input: Lid Switch ...
Then I tried failsafe mode. The process is a little bit more verbose and here are lines ACPI: Lid Switch then the input: Lid Switch one and then follows an ACPI: Power Button [PWRN] which is the very last one displayed. After that the system freezes, no disk activity (led off, no seek noise) and that's all.
Thanks for helping.

Just in case someone thinks about it: I already tried blacklisting the button module of ACPI, as I report a few posts above.

By the way, tpenya, what are your bios settings regarding the NVidia card : Discrete or Optimus ?
I wonder if I can try to boot in basic (intel chip mode)

I had to set up discrete in order to my external monitor to work with the docking station. I wouldn't say that would make any difference for our issue, but definitely is worth trying. Please let us know if you try. I you haven't, I'll do it after work and will let you know.
