dual boot broken Mageia 3 + Windows 8

Postby mystere88 » Jul 6th, '13, 16:53

After installing Mageia 3 on a Lenovo notebook running Windows 8, I arrived on the Grub screen with
boot choice "Mageia" and "Windows". Mageia works perfectly, but when choosing "Windows" I got the message
Code: Select all
Booting windows
root (hd0,0)
filesystem type unknownm partition 0x83
makeactive
chainloader +1

Bootmgr is missing
...

Result of "fdisk -l" is
Code: Select all

#fdisk -l
         Device           Boot
     /dev/sda1           *

Is it normal that only one line is displayed here?? With "df -k" I got a lot of
partitions with sda1, up to sda8, or even sda17.

I have tried with Rescure option on the Install DVD; by rewriting the boot loader; but nothing changes.

What do I need to do?? Any comment would be greatly appreciated.

Dual booting with Windows 8 is not as straight-forward as dual booting with Windows used to be. This forum thread may be of interest:

Many thanks Jim for the info. So I has been blindly confident on possible dual boot with W8.
Now I understand that it could be possible with next year's Mageia 4 ; has been possible with other distro
like OpenSuse 12.3. After a fast try with OpenSuse 12.3, it still stuck with my Lenovo.

I am afraid I cannot follow such complex instructions. Thus have to give up with Linux on this machine... very sadly.

An option, if you would like to continue experimenting with and learning about linux, is to install VirtualBox in Windows and then install Mageia in a virtual machine:

Using VirtualBox is usually not too difficult and there are people in this forum who could probably advise, if you do require help.

Not for the inexperienced user, but if you really do need to get Windows 8 and Mageia to dual boot, here's how I did it. Works for both Mageia-2 and Mageia-3. You can change the background and icons to give yourself a Mageia-themed boot screen.

Here’s the recent mail I got
his is the sequence that I use on all ‘Bootmgr is missing’ errors.
As you have discovered, some of these operations have to be run several times. You have tried 1 and part of 2, so I suggest you start at number 3.

1. Startup Repair (you may have to run it several times).

2. If the above doesn't cure the problem, go back to the Repair Option and this time choose Command Prompt, then type these 4 commands (in all instances the capitals are for clarity only):
BOOTREC /FIXMBR and press Enter
BOOTREC /FIXBOOT and press Enter.
BOOTREC /SCANOS and press Enter.
BOOTREC /REBUILDBCD and press Enter.

3. If it’s still not successful or you receive ‘No operating system found’ or ‘Element not found’ messages, go back to the Command Prompt and make the partition active by typing these commands:
DISKPART and press Enter.
LIST DISK and press Enter.
SELECT DISK N and press Enter (N represents the disk you want).
LIST PARTITION and press Enter.
SELECT PARTITION N and press Enter (N represents the partition you want).
ACTIVE and press Enter.
EXIT and press Enter.
Even after making the partition active, you may need to rerun 1 above and perhaps 2 as well.
