This morning I attempted to upgrade Mageia 2 (32 bit KDE) to version 3. The update notification applet does not appear on my taskbar (I removed it when I first installed 2, since I normally use Applet to update/install software), but I verified that the latest version of MGA online was installed on my system. I also updated all packages and media sources before attempting to upgrade the system. I ended up using the command line to activate mageia-prepare-upgrade, and the dialogue window which appeared seemed to indicate that everything was installed smoothly. I restarted the computer as directed, and "Mageia 3 Upgrade Preparation" now appears as an option in the boot menu. However, when I select this entry, the computer still boots to my installation of Mageia 2. Multiple reboots have not yielded a different result.

To paraphrase a catchphrase from my youth in the 80s, "I want my Mageia 3!" We don't have the best broadband support in our household, so I would like to avoid downloading the full DVD iso as an installation medium except as a last resort, since it will tie up our bandwidth for hours. I also do not want to "reinvent the wheel" with a clean install of 3. Any help from the forum users which would enable the upgrade process from the boot menu would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for everyone's help.

Are /bin, /lib, /lib64 and /sbin real directories or symlinks to directories in /usr. To check, enter in a terminal:

If they are symlinks, the result should include something like these lines:

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 7 May 7 21:16 bin -> usr/bin/
...
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 7 May 7 21:16 lib -> usr/lib/
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 May 7 21:16 lib64 -> usr/lib64/
...
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 8 May 7 21:16 sbin -> usr/sbin/

If so, then follow the rest of the instructions:

Jim - thank you for the prompt response. When I ran the command "/ ll" in Konsole, all of the output statements matched the info you supplied EXCEPT "lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 May 7 21:16 lib64 -> usr/lib64/" was not in the output. I am using a 32 bit processor, if that makes a difference. I also noted that one of the output statements had the message "-rw------- 1 root root 1300407 Jun 8 06:06 dead.letter"

After running the command, I went ahead & followed the rest of the command line prompts set forth in the wiki release notes. After I ran the last command, the output looked like this:

"[root@localhost (our user name)]# urpmi --replacefiles --auto-update --auto
Packages are up to date"

Rebooted, same result as before. Still stuck in "second gear," pardon the pun.

Since you are running 32 bit Mageia, the absence of /usr/lib64 is to be expected. The presence of the other symlinks indicates that the UsrMove completed successfully. (You can ignore the dead.letter file.)

What are the outputs of each of the following commands entered in a terminal

cat /etc/product.id
urpmq --list-url | grep release

Jim - I ran the commands as directed- here is the output.

COMMAND: uname -r
OUTPUT: 3.4.45-desktop586-1.mga2

COMMAND: cat /etc/product.id
OUTPUT: vendor=Mageia.Org,distribution=Mageia,type=Basic,version=2,branch=Official,release=1,arch=i586,product=Default

COMMAND: urpmq --list-url | grep release
OUTPUT: nothing happened (I ran the command both as a user and as root).

You don't seem to have any sources defined. In MCC -> Software Management -> Configure media sources, is anything listed?

Try again entering the commands as root:

urpmi.removemedia -a

This first command is probably redundant (but harmless) if you do in fact have no sources defined.

and then

urpmi.addmedia --distrib --mirrorlist http://mirrors.mageia.org/api/mageia.3.i586.list

This second command may take a few minutes to complete, if you have a slow connection.

Finally try updating

urpmi --replacefiles --auto-update --auto

Jim-- sorry for the late reply, but I am happy to report that I am now in "third gear" and cruising with Mageia 3 on our desktop!

After reviewing your last reply, I figured out where things previously went awry- at the "Add the Mageia online sources" step. After I cut and pasted the command which you included in your last post, the update went without a hitch- well, almost... I had a network "hiccup" when I rebooted the system, but I resolved that issue after downloading the necessary driver. My system is now up to date and humming along smoothly.

There is no way that I could express my gratitude to you and the Mageia community EXCEPT by making a donation to the Mageia community, which I just did in your honor.
