I upgraded Mageia 2 x64 to Mageia 3 x64 by DVD.
So, the upgrade went pretty smooth except for a couple of things. After selecting upgrade it took less than 30 minutes. When it asked me about the time zone etc I was going to make sure my ATI 6870 video card was set up. I opened the configuration and hit the test button and got a black screen. I had to reset it and go through the update again though there were no packages to update. Only took a minute and finished without a problem.
When I rebooted everything went fine and I ran urpmi --auto-update in a console as root at which point I got "insert core media".
I had to ctrl+c to stop that and goto Configure Media Sources in Control Center MCC. The paths were wrong. Had to put:
- Code: Select all
/run/media/john/Mageia-3-x86_64/x86_64/media/core
It seems they changed the path to the DVD. You can find it in Dolphin by browsing to the core folder and copying and pasting it in media sources.
Then I ran urpmi --auto-update again and all was fine.
Google Chrome was uninstalled during the upgrade and I had to follow this thread to re-install it:
https://forums.mageia.org/en/viewtopic.php?f=36&t=2053 All settings, extensions and favorites were retained.
I then went to check the video card and it froze again when I hit test. I had to select the driver and ok it and it ask me if I wanted to use the proprietary driver , I said yes and now the test button works as it should. I had wrongly assumed it had automatically used it and it had not.
Everything seems ok now and my root partition has 0.9 GB more free space.
I have a small problem with the Check Mail button in Kmail which I'll post in a new thread.
I'm still looking around but it looks like the developers & packagers done a fantastic job. This is my first ever upgrade to a Linux system because I always done it when upgrading a HDD or there were so many changes it was not supported or recommended.
I have two SSD's and HDD's. One SSD in Win7 and one is Mageia with the HDD's being storage. It is a Quad core Ivy Bridge so you'll be able to judge upgrade time. Everything seem ok...though I need to check my TRIM and a few other custom tweaks I have. I think it is all ok.
Thanks to all who were involved in the creation of Mageia 3. I wouldn't want to live without Mageia!
