I tried to turn on the onscreen keyboard from the login screen and now After I select mageia on startup, I get a sad face and an error saying "oh no! Something has gone wrong. A problem has occurred and the system can't recover. Please contact a system administrator"

You may be missing some needed packages that cause your desktop to crash.

Suggestions:

1. Boot into another runlevel or find a way to check the X logs and see the error. (then you can post back if you'd like ;))
2. Find a way to change the desktop you are using into another one and try to fix the problem

Good luck

Were you able to login before or was this your first attempt? The screen comes from GNOME desktop, probably your graphics card
or the currently used drivers don't support hardware acceleration. In this case, you can select GNOME fallback or GNOME classic
on the login screen as session. Does that work?
