xfdiff replacement?

Postby scsijon » Mar 30th, '13, 02:58

I have a rescue system disc, it is a minimal system.

It has xfdiff on it, but the latest version 4.5.0 is now some six years old and seems unmaintained.

It is having problems with long lines, sometimes they appear shortened, sometimes not at all. I believe there are also a few other problems with it in the modern linux, so most builders have been cutting some of it out.

It's suitability is that it only needs diff, which is there anyway.

It doesn't need tcl/tk, etc. so the rescue disc size is maintained tiny.

Does anyone know of a similar package, or is one of the programmers willing to take it on and update it?

thanks

From the top of my head there are at least two alternatives. kdiff3, which requires KDE libraries,
which gets you more bloat on a minimal systems (probably unwanted).
Or vimdiff, which is basically an extension to vi(m) http://vimdoc.sourceforge.net/htmldoc/diff.html
Also there's a gui version of it, gvimdiff.
There's also emacs which brings ediff with it: http://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/manual/ediff.html

If you need some more alternatives to try, here's a list:
