[SOLVED] flashplayer broke recently

EDIT: if flash breaks or is buggy after a browser or flash plugin update, try uninstalling nspluginwrapper, if it's installed.

I have an odd problem, flashplayer-plugin works some of the time, but on a lot of videos (eg youtube) I get an error that says "flashplayer is required to view content" with an offer to install it from adobe.

All the videos that do not work with firefox work perfectly in chromium browser.

I notice the videos that I have tested in chromium all have commercials prior to the actual video. I'm not sure if that's what is blocking flashplayer in firefox, but whatever the problem, this just started, I only noticed it Friday. I recall recent updates to flash and firefox.

I have read the MAQ, and done things I found in various threads but nothing as worked.

I tried entering the html5 trial, as some of the videos that don't work all have "about html5" on the context menu and NOT the flash settings I see with 'real' flash videos. But whether in the test or not, I get the "flashplayer is required" message.

I tried installing upstream, uninstalled that ad tried the official package again, I deleted the .macromedia folder and even tried putting a copy of the .so in a local plugins directory. Nothing works.

I'm at a total loss, I just can't see why I have flash installed, it works, even shows I have the latest Linux version when I check on line, but 1/2 the videos on youtube throw a message implying flash is not installed.

Anyone else see similar? Ideas as to what I should poke at next?

Well, some more information could be helpful, like which flash version chromium has/uses (right click on flash video -> about flashplayer) and which version you have installed.

Well, seems quite outdated:

But if something in there helps, please mention it here, so i'll add it to the MAQeia :)

Uninstalling nspluginwrapper fixed it.

It had worked fine for about 6 months prior to a recent upgrade of firefox and/or flash plugin. That's why I suspected something up with the plugin, which I couldn't find. Apparently the updated flash introduced an incompatibility with nspluginwrapper.

The symptoms were odd. Some videos on you tube would run fine, and others on the same site would not. On those that didn't run, if I right clicked before it was done loading I'd get the flash context menu, but that would disappear in about 2 seconds, thereafter if I right clicked I got some different menu with items like 'view page info' and 'about html5.' Apparently the nspluginwrapper reinterpreted the media to be html5, and call whatever was needed, but the media responded with the snow-screen with that message that "flash player is required in order to view content..."

I've fixed flash a dozen times in the past by unistalling nspluginwrapper. :? I didn't suspect it here because it ad worked fie for so long, and only ff and flash were updated. Live and learn.

2. nspluginwrapper is NO LONGER RECOMMENDED for Flash Player on Linux. It causes Flash to crash more often, and modern Firefox now has the out-of-process plugin-container to protect the browser from plugin crashes. Please ensure that you fully remove nspluginwrapper. On Fedora or RHEL rpm -e nspluginwrapper --allmatches will remove all architectures of nspluginwrapper.

Outdated, but apparently still useful info. :o
