I have just bought a new laptop battery to replace the old one which had only 26% capacity.

Inserted the new battery in to laptop then connected mains cable to laptop to charge up new battery. After several hours of charging it does not go any further than 61% charged. Both the BIOS and K Desktop both state the new battery is healthy and both state the battery is charging (when I connect it to mains supply) but still does not go higher than 61% charged. Also the charge indicator on the laptop goes off after a few minutes but the desktop still claims to be charging.

The battery itself is a compatible battery not an original product from the laptop manufacturer.

Try removing it and putting it back in. Do this with the power cable disconnected. (computer off)

Some laptop also allow a battery cycling / refresh. It will discharge and charge the battery, and measure that.
Also if you got a new battery, you should cycle that a few times (a full discharge and a full charge is one cycle).

i did that.

I also took the battery out and placed it on the window sill to get it warmed up by the sun. Hasn't worked.

Think I might send it back.

It's a Dell Inspiron 6400. I think it was made (assembled) in 2007 so quite old by today's standards but still does a very good job as running all Linux distros I've installed on it over the years.
