Hi, everyone!

I'm new here and I'm also new to Mageia and GNOME 3. Never used either one of them before and neither have I used Mandriva before. But I've been in the Linux's for a bit and have been using Ubuntu until I decided to try out Mageia 2 just recently. Pardon my naivete, if you please.

Now, I don't know if what I'm doing wrong or if there's something I'm doing not quite right.

See, I wanted to post screenshots of my new installation on my blog. But for some reason, I'm not getting anything from PrntScrn. I've also checked my keyboard settings and it's there! I'm just not getting anything. Not even in the clipboard.

I've been Googling and searching this forum and have found nothing. As it appears, I'm the only one who's had this problem yet.

So, how do I make PrntScrn work?

P.S. Here are some system info, if they will help:
Hardware: Asus EeePC 701 (4G storage | 900 MHz processor, underclocked to 600 MHz | 512 MB RAM)
OS: Mageia 2, GNOME 3.x

Obvious question first. Have you confirmed the gnome-screenshot or shutter packages are actually installed?
I do not use Gnome myself so I do not know if either of them get installed by default.

I am quite impressed that Gnome 3 is working satisfactorily on an eee701
On my own eee701 I have 3GB of RAM and run LXDE so it is really quite snappy.

If you are in the mood to try out new things you might like to give Mageia 3 a spin before you go to Ubuntu 12.04
Mageia 3 Beta2 is available to try out at https://www.mageia.org/en/3/

It is not bug free yet, so I would not recommend it for production use, but you might be interested in seeing how Gnome 3 has evolved.

BTW: If you install the eee-control package it gives you an icon in the system tray to manage wireless transmitter, sleep and clock speed.

Well, Gnome by default creates screenshots (screen just flashes shortly at the edges) and directly saves them below /home/username/Pictures ...
There's no more dialog like with ksnapshot by default when you press printscreen key. What you probably want is to change the default keybinding to run

As a non-GNOME user i always find it most amusing how they bar some settings away from the users, and make simple configuration

For some unknown reason, gnome-screenshot is not installed automatically in Mageia-2, so you have to install that package manually.

To get the good old window back with options to name and save your Pictures; you can edit the start command for gnome-screenshot to

Code: Select all

gnome-screenshot --interactive

(You can try it in the terminal first if you like)
The automatic saving without any warning "looks" like nothing is happening.

To maintain a shred of honor I will maintain that the solution is more direct and easily spotted in my post though (Well I did use the code tag )

Could you say where to go to edit the start command. I've looked through all the settings in dconf-editor and can't see it.

Regarding dconf-editor I believe the doctor has given you all the info that you need.

Anyway to get back the screenshot function like it was you could:
Open the system preferences. Click Keyboard. Click shortcuts tab. Click custom shortcuts. Click the plus sign. Give a name. Enter the command gnome-screenshot --interactive. Apply. Click where it says "disabled" to assign a new accelerator. Press Print Scrn key on keyboard. Accept the warning and let it reassign.

This probably means that neither of them are installed. I was used to them just working. They did in the other stuff I've used before, so...

You're impressed? I'm shocked! But I'm glad about it.

How did you make 3GB of RAM work on an EeePC 701? I thought it maxes at 1GB. I've read about people trying to install 2GB RAM and finding out that anything beyond 1GB do not get recognized. They asked for support and that's the kind of reply they get.

I could try Mageia 3, I guess. It's just... The very new ones required lots of space. And mine's only got 4GB. I actually wanted to try CrunchBang because they say that it's really lightweight and work fast. But it requires a lot of space which I don't have. Will Mageia 3 still fit in my EeePC?

Mind you, I'm really interested.

Well actually it was 2MB (I made a typo in the original post) I just plugged it in and it worked.

My eee has a 4MB ssd. Mageia 3 fits OK, but I do not use Gnome or KDE which both need a lot of space. I usually use XFCE, but at the moment I am running Mageia 3 with razorqt desktop. Razorqt is still very immature, but it looks promising for the future.

In order to avoid installing a lot of unnecessary packages in my eee I always install using the 'classical installer' which allows me to select only those packages I want. In Mageia 3 with the classical installer it is possible to select just, LXDE, IceWM, e17, or XFCE desktops without having to have either Gnome or KDE (razorqt can only be added after install of one of the others) I usually do a network install using the 'all.img' bootloader which is described in the wiki.

When you installed you appear to have used the Gnome LiveCD. When you install that way all the packages on the CD get copied to your hard drive whether you need them or not.

That is normal for installs from the LiveCD. If you want to force a log in, open your MageiaControlCentre>Boot>AutoLogin where you can disable it.

When installing from the classical installer the default is to require login.

gnome-screenshot really is not installed by default. I didn't even think to look into that.

I only had to get it installed and, of course, PrntScrn now works as accelerator for screenshots. I've also tested the screencast and it works, too.

Oh, one thing, I can't take a screenshot whenever I'm on the home screen (superkey) or the run command screen (Alt + F2). Is that normal?

P.S. I've figured out the automatic login. The settings at the Mageia Control Center about log-ins apparently override the user settings. I had to switch off auto-login there, too.

Well, the question would be, from which medium or how did you install GNOME?
Can you try if installing task-gnome wants to install even more packages?
