Html and CSS

I've always had a problem getting CSS to work but now I think I know why, the books are always written experting you to have a windows box in my case that is not true. Can anyone point me to a howto or a book written knowing you have a Linux box. Or does one have to immerse oneself in some other language. Perhaps the HTML book was written so long ago it isn't compliant

html and css is completely platform independent. It does not matter if you are on windows or not.

The guide I always find myself revisiting for CSS is this one

When I want to know just about anything to do with html, css or HTML I go to
http://w3schools.com/
If I want more information I then google for the rest.

That's what I learned at college, all I can think is I must be doing a typo, I keep revisiting, worrying it like an old bone, trying to make it work for me. The thing I always fail at is getting all the pages to share the same background I always go back to using internal style sheets. I know that I should be able to sperate content and style, lump all the background and font info onto the css file.

If you use the firebug extension in Firefox you should be able to spot what is happening. It may be something as simple as having the wrong path to your css file.

Alternatively post your html and style sheet and maybe we can spot the error.

Have actually got some code to work, but the problem is 'I'm not the man I was at 40' and I learned HTML on a windows box on Win 98se. I'm now using Firefox, Kwrite and Kompozer, trying to write strict xhtml and although it is very nearly the same it isn't identical
but perseverance will help.
installed Fire-bug hmm, looks complicated
Well finally my perseverance has been rewarded, its not slick and professional but I can use external CSS and it's there up on the web for all to see http://www.cornish-bio-fuels.co.uk
