Hi!

I gave mageia2KDE a try today and installed it on HD, after my old laptop ibmt23 refused to start mageia3-beta, this ended in some kernel-panic.
Where can I find the actual e17.0-packages? In the repo I only found an outdated version 0.16.999-6xxxx from somewhen last year. There must be some new packages around here, confirming the last posts in this thread
https://forums.mageia.org/en/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=2061

Have I to look in testing-repo, and even more, can I upgrade the whole system to testing?
Otherwise I should find place on my ibmt60 and install there mageia3-beta, at least the live-cd runs there perfect.

Thanx for any tips!

Hi!

E17 is in Cauldron (Mageia 3beta). Very nice DE...

You can install Cauldron on your IBM (recommended). Updating from Mga2 to Cauldron is a problem at the moment, so I wouldn't recommend it.

cheers,
Bernd

OOOps, this went wrong...
First I detected, after installing the old e17version 0.16999.69xxx, the new e17.0-version beside the old one in the repos after activating the core-testing. It was marked as an mga3-package, dated with 20130125
So I tried to install it, this was not possible because of unsolved dependencies with e17-old, so it was not an update, what I had presumed before.
I purged the old e17-stuff, ended up with a bunch of orphaned packages and purged these too
Now I just know better...
So the system was useless anyway, no more access to MCC and installing software, and tremendous slow; I started the upgrade to cauldron, what ended in a desaster.
Ok, learning by doing
I installed mageia2 once more, did all the updates etc and had a look to e17 in the repos: the new version e17.0 has disappeared! Seems to be a one-day-wonder
2 Questions please:
- will there be the new e17.0 be available for mageia2?
- is it possible, mix packages from different distros of mageia or will you run in hassle doing this?

Thanx a lot

It is possible to install a fully functional e17: just do a
Code: Select all
urpmi task-e17
you should follow the repos (16.9999) and normal updates. It will probably be updated eventually. If you want bleeding edge you would want to pick a distro like Arch anyway.
Here is a picture of my VB install after loging in to e17 I only clicked next and had the fully functional install.

Yes - and you will fall on your nose if you do it.

And IMHO e17 is more candy than functionality so I would recommend openbox.

OpenBox can't look nice like e17.
For example, my e17 desktop

all panels and gadgets from E17.

As I think E17 is not WM already. It's look like small DE.

I beg to differ:

But I have to admit that e17 looks very nice and it has cool animations too. I does not have the functionality of openbox though; you can do way more with it.
By the way that is Gizmo (our house terrorist) behind a transparent urxvt terminal integrated in the OB wallpaper (running htop)-the menu is cairo-dock.

Edit: Here is a poor excuse of a video to show the flexibility - have a look at the window "aero snap" done with the WIN+arrow keys (click <show>).
(I have to link to it since the youtube video integration on this board is not quite finished yet....)
